Colgate Falls to Harvard on the Road
CAMBRIDGE, MASS. (2/18/11) – The Colgate
women's hockey team experienced its first setback of the weekend
when it fell to Harvard 7-0 on Friday night.
Junior goaltender Kimberly
Sass had 27 saves for the Raiders.
Colgate (11-18-3, 8-11-2 ECAC) got off to a strong start,
outshooting the Crimson 4-0 in the first few minutes of play.
Harvard soon came alive, going on an offensive surge minutes later
that led to its first goal at the 10:34 mark. A series of penalties
for the Raiders then helped the Crimson find three more goals over
the next seven minutes, two of which were during power plays, to
take a 4-0 lead at the end of the first period.
In the second frame, it was Harvard came out to an explosive
start, outshooting Colgate 7-3 in the first five minutes of play.
Both teams continued to battle it out on the ice over the next few
minutes, with the Crimson creating majority of the scoring
opportunities. Harvard's hard work eventually paid off at the 10:38
mark, picking up a short-handed goal to extend its lead to five
goals. The Raiders then attempted to make a comeback, firing a
series of shots in the 15th minute, but two minutes later it was
Harvard that found success with a sixth goal at the 17:02 mark.
Harvard then went on to score once more in the final 20 minutes of
play to win the game 7-0.
Colgate will play its final game of the regular season tomorrow
when it travels to Hannover, N.H. for a matchup against No. 10
Dartmouth on Saturday at 4 p.m. The team is currently in a
three-way tie for the final playoff spot with Yale and Rensselaer,
who both have 18 points from an 8-11-2 record as well.
The Raiders will need at least a tie or a win against the Big
Green on Saturday to still have a chance at clinching the final
spot. The results of the other games will also be a deciding
factor. Both Yale and Rensselaer will play at 4 p.m. tomorrow as
well, with the Bulldogs taking on Princeton and the Engineers
facing St. Lawrence in their final regular season games.
