Saints Burn Clarkson in Overtime

Feb. 15: St. Lawrence University junior Vanessa Emond's 11th goal of the season couldn't have come at a better time.  The Levis, QC native scored on a rebound 2:38 into overtime, lifting the Saints women's hockey team to a crucial 2-1 win over Clarkson University at Appleton Arena on Tuesday afternoon.  Graduate student Maxie Weisz turned in 30 saves to anchor the Scarlet and Brown to victory.

The win moves St. Lawrence to 14-16-2 (9-11-0) into a tie for seventh place in the ECAC Hockey standings with just two games remaining.  The Saints travel to the Capital District to take on Union and Rensselaer this weekend in the regular season finale.  Meanwhile, Clarkson falls to 11-15-6 (8-8-4) after the overtime loss.

"I thought we came out flying in the first period, but they turned the momentum in their favor by the third period," said St. Lawrence head coach Chris Wells.  "Maxie made a few big saves and we had a great penalty kill at the end of regulation into overtime.  (Erica) Howe made a jaw-dropping save in overtime to extend the game, but fortunately Vanessa was there for the rebound."

The Saints outshot Clarkson by a wide 14-6 margin in the opening period, but were unable to solve Howe in the opening 20:00 minutes.  Though Weisz didn't see as much action in the first, the six saves she did make were from point-blank range.

Following the scoreless stanza, St. Lawrence cracked the scoreboard at 6:24 of the second period to snag a 1-0 lead.  Sophomore Brooke Fernandez chipped a pass to rookie Rylee Smith behind Clarkson's net.  Smith sent a crisp centering pass into the slot for a wide-open Kelly Sabatine, and though her initial shot was stopped by Howe, the sophomore got her own rebound and finished the play for her 15th of the year and the only goal of the second period.

Clarkson poured on the offensive chances down the stretch of the second period, including three at the top of the crease.  However, Weisz was fantastic and kept the Golden Knights from evening the score.

The visitors would net the game-tying goal at 6:26 of the third period, as Hailey Wood snapped a wrist shot that hit the inside of the post to Weisz's right and bounced into the net for her fourth goal of the year.  Danielle Boudreau and Melissa Waldie were credited with helpers.

Clarkson had the best opportunity to win the game in regulation in the final minute, as they were given a power play with 55 seconds left.  Wood appeared poised to score the game-winner with Weisz out of position, but sophomore assistant captain Jamie Goldsmith dove to the near post and blocked a shot headed for the net.  Her defensive effort allowed St. Lawrence to force the overtime session.

After killing off the remaining time on the power play, Sabatine worked her way into Clarkson's zone and found classmate Michelle Ng near the goal.  Ng circled the net, pulled up and sent a crossing pass to Emond, who settled the puck and fired on net.  Though Howe stopped the puck, the rebound sat at the top of the crease and Emond pounced on her chance, scoring the game-winning goal and allowing her team to empty on the ice in celebration.

Howe finished with 35 stops for Clarkson, as the Saints owned a 37-31 advantage in shots on goal.  Neither team was able to score on the power play (0-for-3), though Sabatine extended her active point-scoring streak to six games with her two-point outing.

The game was likely the last at Appleton Arena for the Saints' Class of 2011, which celebrated "Senior Day" on Saturday.  The group includes Weisz, senior assistant captain Kirsten Roach as well as Lauren Brozowski and Nicolien Bongaerts.  Karell Emard, who missed Tuesday's game with an injury, is expected to return in 2011-12.

St. Lawrence will be in action again on Friday, February 18 in Schenectady, NY against Union College, with the puck scheduled to drop on the Saints and Dutchwomen at 7:00pm.
