Dutchwomen Defeated by No. 2 Cornell
SCHENECTADY, NY- The Union Dutchwomen scored two third period goals to close the deficit but it was not enough as they fell to #2 Cornell 4-2 on Saturday afternoon.
The game was scoreless early on the first period as the Union
defense held Cornell at bay. Goaltender Kate
Gallagher made a diving stop of a Big Red Shot at
13:42. At 14:41 however, Cornell's Rebecca Johnson beat
Gallagher for the score to put the Big Red on top 1-0.
In the second period, Lauriane Rougeau weaved the Union
defense to make it 2-0 Cornell. The Big Red would score again
later in the period to go ahead 3-0.
The Dutchwomen finally got on the board just 1:50 into the
third period on a goal by Callee
Heywood. Cornell would answer back to take the 4-1
lead. Jeannie
Sabourin slid in the puck past Cornell goaltender Lauren
Slebodnick to make it 4-2. Union would almost add their third score
of the game but Lauren
Cromartie's shot was denied by Slebodnick.
Gallagher had 32 saves in net for Union. Slebodnick made 12
saves for Cornell.
Cornell led in shots 36-14.
There was only one penalty in the game by Cornell's Rebecca
Johnson in the second period.
Union heads on the road to play Dartmouth next Friday
afternoon at 3 pm.
NOTES- Heywood's goal was her fourth of the season which ties her with Stefanie Thomson for the team lead….Sabourin's goal was her first of the season….Union did not commit a penalty in a game for the first time this season.
