Rensselaer Holds Off Colgate
TROY, N.Y. – Kristen
Jakubowski and Madison
Marzario scored 1:02 apart midway through the third
period to break a 3-3 tie and the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute
(RPI) women’s hockey team defeated Colgate, 5-4, in an ECAC
Hockey game at the Houston Field House.
RPI improves to 9-8-6 overall – including 4-1-4 in its last
nine games – and 7-4-1 in the league, while the Raiders fall
to 7-14-2 and 4-7-1.
After Colgate tied the game early in the third period, Jakubowski
(Lake Placid, NY/The Northwood School) put the Engineers back ahead
with a shot from the top of the left circle that squeezed through
the goalie and into the back of the net. For Jakubowski, a junior
forward, the goal was her fifth of the season and second in as many
games.
Marzario (Prior Lake, MN/Shattuck St. Mary’s) needed just
over a minute later to give RPI its third two-goal advantage of the
afternoon when she tallied her first career goal on an end-to-end
rush. The freshman defenseman, who also had two assists, scored on
a fluky play when she took the puck from her defensive zone and
skated down the right side of the ice below the goal line. Her
centering pass kicked off the skate of a Colgate defender and slid
across the goal line.
The Raiders pulled to within one goal at 16:01 when sophomore
Brittany Phillips (Lauder, MB/Westman Wildcats) scored a power play
marker on a hard shot from the bottom of the left face-off circle.
Colgate pulled its goaltender for the final 1:22 but was unable to
even the score.
Rensselaer needed just about the entire first period before
opening the scoring as its first goal came at 19:34 of the opening
frame as sophomore Taylor
Horton (St. Thomas, ON/Bluewater Hawks) scored her first
of two on the day from the slot. Junior Alisa
Harrison (Vienna, VA/Washington Pride) doubled the lead
with a breakaway goal at 2:30 of the second period, but Jessi
Waters (Menlo Park, CA/San Jose Sharks) cut the Raiders deficit in
half with a goal at the 6:56 mark.
Horton’s second goal, a deflection of a Marzario shot, put
the home team back ahead by two goals, but Colgate again fought
back, this time with Rachel Walsh (Calgary, AB/Edge School) scoring
from just outside of the crease with only 1:07 left in the second
period.
The Raiders tied the score on a close-range goal from Jenna
Klynstra (Edmonton, AB/Edmonton Thunder) at 3:56 of the third
period. Klynstra, who also had an assist, was one of four Colgate
skaters with multiple points. Waters finished with a goal and two
assists, Phillips also had a goal and an assist and Amanda Kirwan
(Mississauga, ON/Toronto Jr. Aeros) notched two assists.
For RPI, in addition to Marzario and Horton, others with multiple
points were defenseman Sierra
Vadner (Apple Valley, MN/Minnesota Thoroughbreds), who
had three assists, and Jordan
Smelker (Anchorage, AK/Team Alaska U-19), who assisted on
two goals.
Senior Sonia van der Bliek (Toronto, ON/Toronto Jr. Aeros) earned
the win in relief, stopping eight shots in the third period.
Shannon
Ramelot (Bloomfield, MI/Honeybaked) made 15 saves on 17
shots through the first two periods. For Colgate, senior Lisa
Plenderleith (Ajax, ON/Durham Jr. Lightning) made 10 saves.
RPI returns to the ice on at league foes Harvard and Dartmouth
next weekend. Colgate plays Cornell in a pair of ECAC Hockey games
next weekend.
