Raiders Skate to Shutout Win Over Union
HAMILTON, N.Y. (1/14/11) – The Colgate women's ice hockey
team found its fourth ECAC Hockey win of the season on Friday night
when it shut out Union 1-0 in Schenectady, N.Y. Sophomore Jenna
Klynstra scored the game-winning goal for the
Raiders.
Colgate (7-13-2, 4-6-1 ECAC) got off to an exciting start in the
first period, firing a series of shots at the Dutchwomen's net,
which soon landed the Raiders a goal at the 3:01 mark. Sophomore
Brittany
Phillips delivered a pass to Klynstra, who hammered it
home to give her team the 1-0 lead. With an early goal in its
favor, Colgate continued its attacking pressure throughout the
period, outshooting Union 15-4.
The Raiders opened the second frame with a pair of quick shots on
net. As the period continued, Colgate continued to create scoring
opportunities, forcing Kate Gallagher to make one save after
another to keep the Dutchwomen in the game. Despite all their
attempts, the Raiders could not find a second goal, ending the
period still holding the 1-0 lead. Colgate outshot Union 15-8.
With a scoreless second period, both teams came out determined to
find the net. This time it was Union that fired the first shots of
the frame at senior Lisa
Plenderleith who knocked them away to maintain her team's
lead. Colgate soon found its rhythm once again, outshooting the
Dutchwomen for the third time. However, as the final 20 minutes of
play came to an end, neither team could find success, resulting in
the Raiders' fourth conference win of the season.
Colgate outshot the Dutchwomen 42-18 in the game. Plenderleith had
18 saves while Union's Gallagher had 41.
The Raiders will resume play tomorrow when they travels to
Rensselaer for their final game of the weekend at 4 p.m. in Troy,
