Big Red Beat Big Green, Earn Berth in Frozen Four
ITHACA, N.Y. -- The Cornell women's hockey team advanced to its
second consecutive Frozen Four in style, matching an NCAA
tournament record for goals in a game in a 7-1 victory over ECAC
Hockey foe Dartmouth on Saturday afternoon at Lynah Rink. The
second-seeded Big Red improved to 31-2-1 on the season with a win
in front of 1,565 fans. Dartmouth's season came to an end with a
22-12-0 mark.
With the victory, Cornell will face the winner of the
Mercyhurst-Boston University game in one national semifinal, while
Boston College (a 4-1 winner over Minnesota) will meet either
Wisconsin or defending national champion Minnesota-Duluth in the
other game with the national title game on the line. The Big Red's
31 victories is the most by any Big Red hockey team, men's or
women's, surpassing the 30-win men's hockey team of 2002-03 that
advanced to the Frozen Four.
Chelsea
Karpenko scored two goals and had an assist,
while Catherine
White (goal, two assists) also had a three-point
day. In addition, three players had multi-point efforts as Cornell
scored two in each of the first two periods and three in the third
to win going away. In goal, Amanda
Mazzottamade 20 saves and allowed just a shorthanded goal
in picking up the win.
Dartmouth Camille Dumais scored the lone goal for the visitors,
while Margaux Shapiro and Geneva Kliman each had assists. Freshman
goalkeeper Lindsay Holdcroft made 19 saves in the loss for the Big
Green.
A high-energy first period ended with Cornell leading 2-1,
including a flurry that saw all three goals put on the board in the
span of 1:43. The Big Red started the scoring just eight seconds
after being whistled for its first penalty of the day.
With Catherine
White in the box for checking, Brianne
Jennerstole the puck just inside her own defensive end
and skated the rest of the ice to, beating Holdcroft 1-on-1 put up
her second shorthanded goal of the year as the partisan Lynah crowd
exploded. That would be just the start of a wild two minutes.
A little more than a minute later, Dartmouth capitalized on the
power play itself, as Camille Dumais found a loose puck near the
right circle and beat Mazzotta top right to knot the game at 1-1.
Margaux Sharp and Geneva Kiliman were credited with assists at the
15:27 mark.
Not to be outdone, and with the teams skating at full strength,
Cornell answered right back with a quick score just 31 seconds
later to regain the lead and the momentum, as Ogilvie wrapped
around the goal and beat Holdcroft after being found behind the net
by Karlee
Overguard with 4:02 left in the period.
Mazzotta made five saves and Holdcroft tallied four in the first
20 minutes as the two teams were even 6-6 in shots. Both teams had
one power play opportunity, with Dartmouth cashing in, but also
allowing a shorthanded goal, while Cornell couldn't capitalize on
its only chance.
Despite another even period in terms of total shots on goal
(11-11), the Big Red seemingly had every dangerous chance in the
period, including two goals to put the home team up 4-1 entering
the third. End to end action led to a offensive charge by the Big
Red, and the goal finally came at the 12:51 mark when Hayley
Hughes and Amanda
Young each hit clean cross-ice passes to White, who
buried her 21st goal of the season out in front of the left circle
to up Cornell's lead to 3-1. Fortino made it 4-1 just over two
minutes later when White found her to the right of the crease, and
her shot went over Holdcroft's shoulder to extend Cornell's lead to
three. Karpenko was also credited with an assist on the play.
Cornell made it 5-1 with 15:59 left in the period when an initial
shot by Johnston was saved and Karpenko buried the rebound. White
was also credited with an assist for her third point of the
contest. Cornell scored on a power play opportunity with 12:07 on
the clock to salt the game away, extending the edge to 6-1 when
Karpenko scored on another rebound off a saves shot by Fortino,
with Lauriane
Rougeau also earning an assist.
The lead kept going, as the home team scored on another power
play, this time a whirling spin shot by Johnston after a great feed
to the top of the crease from Karlee
Overguard and Brianne
Jenner with 4:58 remaining on the clock to close out
the scoring.
Game time for the Big Red's NCAA semifinal game will be available
later this weekend.
