Bobcats Defeat Dutchwomen
HAMDEN, Conn. – Led by freshman forward Kelly Babstock's two goals, the Quinnipiac women's ice hockey team defeated the Union Dutchwomen 4-0 at the TD Bank Sports Center on Saturday afternoon.
The Bobcats jumped out to a 1-0 lead on Babstock's first goal
of the game at the 13:37 mark into the first period. Babstock
controlled a rebounded shot from fellow freshman forward Elena
Orlando and put away the only goal of the period for
Quinnipiac.
Quinnipiac extended its lead to 2-0 at the 3:46 mark into the
second period on Brittany Lyons' 10th goal of the
season. Lyons attacked the puck after Union's junior goaltender
Kate
Gallagher was unable to hold onto junior defender Bethany
Dymarczyk's initial shot. The sophomore then took a
backhanded swipe at the puck as she fell to the ice, which found
its way past Union's netminder.
Babstock netted her second goal of the contest, and her
league-leading 29th tally of the season, at the 12:05
mark into the second stanza to increase Quinnipiac's lead, 3-0. The
Mississauga native collected a rebounded shot coming from the stick
of freshman forward Amanda Colin and slid in the puck by an
out-of-position Gallagher.
Freshman forward Lindsay Burman added an insurance goal for
Quinnipiac at the 8:41 mark into the third period.
Gallagher made 42 saves for the Dutchwomen. Victoria Vigilanti
had 23 saves for Quinnipiac.
Neither team saw much time in the penalty box, as Quinnipiac
committed one penalty on the afternoon, while Union was whistled
for two penalties.
The Dutchwomen return to home ice next Friday night when they
host St. Lawrence at 7 pm.
