Late Goal Pushes Dartmouth Past Saints
Feb. 11: Dartmouth College's Moira Scanlon snapped a 2-2 tie at 16:37 of the third period on Friday afternoon, leading the Big Green past the St. Lawrence University women's hockey team at Appleton Arena by the score of 3-2.
Despite outshooting the visitors by a 40-26 margin, St. Lawrence falls to 13-15-2 (8-10-0) as Dartmouth goaltender Lindsay Holdcroft made 38 stops. Graduate student Maxie Weisz made 23 saves for the Saints, but could not keep the Big Green from improving to 16-9-0 (12-7-0) on the season.
"They did a great job on the penalty kill in limiting our chances when we were looking to take the lead," said St. Lawrence head coach Chris Wells. "Dartmouth was the more opportunistic team tonight."
Though St. Lawrence outshot Dartmouth 13-10 in the first period, it was the Big Green that held a 1-0 lead at intermission. Sasha Nanji got the scoring play started with a nifty move around a Saint defender to create a 2-on-1 try. Nanji then slid a pass through the crease to Kelly Foley, who hammered a one-timer from the doorstep past a sprawled-out Weisz. The goal came at 18:20 of the first and was Foley's 12th of the season.
Holdcroft posted a perfect 13-save period, but St. Lawrence needed only 49 seconds into the second stanza to tie the game at 1-1. Senior assistant captain Karell Emard cut into the Dartmouth zone and tipped a pass to junior Vanessa Emond. Emond sent a quick, low shot on net that seemed to fool Holdcroft, knotting the score with her 10th goal of the season.
Foley and junior Alley Bero would exchange goals in the second to set up a dramatic third period with the game tied at 2-2. Foley's second of the game came at 6:31 on the power play, as she sniped a wrist shot past Weisz under the crossbar from the left circle. Bero then tied the game with her sixth goal of the year at 16:44 when she laced a wrist shot of her own by Holdcroft. Sophomore Brooke Fernandez and junior Josee Belanger assisted on the tying goal.
St. Lawrence controlled the majority of the offensive chances again in the third period, outshooting Dartmouth 13-9. However, the Big Green's penalty killing unit did a great job of killing off seven power play tries for the home team and Holdcroft stopped Bero on a breakaway try just over five minutes into the third.
As the clock ticked under 4:00 minutes to play, the visitors began to create chances around the Saints' net. Scanlon delivered the winning goal with 3:23 remaining, as she collected a rebound to Weisz's left, circled the net and banked the puck off of a player across the goal line. The goal was Scanlon's third of the season and proved to be the game-winner.
Weisz finished with 23 saves on the afternoon, but her team closed with a 0-for-10 mark on the power play. Dartmouth was 1-for-6 with the extra skater in a game that included a total of 42 penalty minutes.
St. Lawrence will look to snap its two-game losing skid tomorrow, Saturday, February 12 when it takes on ECAC Hockey rival Harvard University at Appleton Arena. The puck is scheduled to drop on the Saints and Crimson at 2:00pm, with the home team celebrating "Senior Day."
