Tigers Continue Home Ice Hunt With Win Over Union

A pair of power-play goals and a 31-14 advantage in shots led the Princeton women's ice hockey team to a 3-1 victory over Union College Friday night at Baker Rink.

Princeton got goals from Sasha Sherry, Denna Laing and Corey Stearns in the home win, which moved the team to fifth in the ECAC standings. The top four receive home ice, and Princeton stands only one point behind travel partner Quinnipiac with three games remaining.

The Tigers grabbed a 1-0 lead 6:06 into the first when Sherry picked up a rebound off her own shot in the middle of a crowded pack and scored on goaltender Alana Marcinko. The shot from the left circle was Sherry's fourth goal of the season and gave Princeton a lead it would never relinquish.

Princeton built a 2-0 lead on another rebound, as Laing found a shot by Butler on the doorstep and knocked it into the left side of the net. Just over two minutes later, Stearns fired a shot from the blue line that flew past a screened Marcinko for the 3-0 lead. Union put in goaltender Kate Gallagher at that point, and she made 19 saves the rest of the way to keep Union in the contest.

Union did get to within two goals on a power-play blast from Marissa Gentile 8:02 into the third period, following an interference penalty to Danielle DiCesare. The Tigers ended up taking the final three penalties of the game to keep a resilient Union in the hunt, but Tiger goaltender Rachel Weber (13 saves) and the Princeton defense made sure the lead stood at 3-1.

Princeton returns to Baker Rink Saturday at 4 p.m. for its annual Senior Day celebration. If the Tigers hope to play another weekend at home, this game will be a crucial one; the Tigers host a Rensselaer currently three points behind them in the standings. A victory would put Princeton out of reach, while a loss would leave Rensselaer one point back and could leave the Tigers three points out of the top four with two games to play.
