Colgate Falls Short Against Yale
NEW HAVEN, CONN. – The Colgate women's hockey team dropped
its fourth ECAC Hockey game of the season when it fell to Yale 3-1
on Saturday afternoon in New Haven, Conn. The team now has a 3-6-1
league record.
Freshman Rachel
Walsh scored the lone goal for the Raiders.
Colgate (6-13-2, 3-6-1 ECAC) got off to an explosive start,
attacking the Bulldogs' net aggressively in the first two minutes
of the game. The Raiders then found success at the 2:04 when Walsh
picked up a pass from junior Heidi
Peterson and fired it home to give Colgate the 1-0 lead.
Unfortunately, the lead was short-lived with Yale answering back
less than 30 seconds later with a goal from Aleca Hughes to even
the score at 1-1. Colgate continued to create opportinuties,
outshooting the Bulldogs 10-6, but as the period came to a close
the score remained 1-1.
With a fruitful first 20 minutes of play, both teams came out
hungry for a second goal. Similar to the first half, the Raiders
came out playing offensively, creating numerous scoring
opportunities. However, despite outshooting Yale once again 15-9 in
the second frame, the Bulldogs were able to find success twice at
the 9:37 mark with Bray Ketchum and then again at the 12:01 mark
courtesy of Jenna Ciotti, to put the score at 3-1 going into the
final period.
A scoreless third period, in which the Raiders held the shooting
advantage for the third time, resulted in Colgate suffering its
fourth conference setback of the season.
Junior Kimberly
Sass had 19 saves for the Raiders while Yale's Jackee
Snikeris had 33 saves. Colgate outshot the Bulldogs 34-22
overall.
The Raiders will resume ECAC play next weekend when they travel to
Union for a matchup on Friday, Jan. 14 followed by Rensselaer on
Saturday, Jan. 15 at 7 p.m. and 4 p.m. respectively.
