Tigers Earn Fourth Straight Shutout
POTSDAM, N.Y. (1/7/11) - The Princeton women's hockey team ran its winning streak to six games and its shutout streak to four as the Tigers blanked Clarkson 2-0 on Friday night at Cheel Arena.
Princeton and goaltender Rachel Weber have now gone 246:27 of game time since last allowing a goal in a December win over Syracuse. Since then the Tigers have held Syracuse, Boston College, Quinnipiac and now Clarkson without a single goal.
Weber got what turned out to be the only offense Princeton would need when Sasha Sherry converted on the power play at 13:26 of the first period as her wrist shot snuck through a screen and beat Clarkson netminder Erica Howe. Denna Laing assisted on the tally after corralling a loose puck along the boards and sending it to Sherry on the point. Princeton outshot Clarkson in the first period 14-2.
Clarkson held the shot edge in the second period 8-2 but couldn't solve Weber as she maintained the one-goal lead by turning aside all eight shots she faced. Princeton regained its step in the third period and got an insurance goal at 5:39 of the final stanza as Heather Landry netted her second goal of the season off assists from Sherry and Danielle DiCesare.
Sherry's two points moved her into a three-way tie atop the Princeton scoring charts with Sally Butler and Olivia Mucha. Sherry leads the team with 10 assists.
Weber finished the night with 18 saves for her fourth straight shutout and fifth in the last six games. Weber becomes the second Princeton goalie to record four consecutive shutouts, joining Liz Hill who did it in the 1994-95 season. Her shutout streak is now the third longest in Princeton women's hockey history behind Roxanne Gaudiel (277:39) and Hill (249:34). Weber lowered her goals-against average to 1.65 and raised her save percentage to .930.
The win moved Princeton back to .500 in ECAC Hockey play as Princeton now stands at 6-6-1 in the league. Princeton is 9-10-1 overall. Princeton completes the weekend on Saturday afternoon at St. Lawrence at 4 p.m. The Saints were 3-2 losers to Quinnipiac on Friday night.
