Raiders Skate to Overtime Tie with Clarkson
POTSDAM, N.Y. (2/5/11) – The Colgate
women's hockey team played to its third overtime tie of the season,
2-2, with Clarkson on Saturday afternoon. This was the Raiders
sixth overtime game of the season. Sophomore Jessica
Hootz and freshman Jocelyn
Simpson scored a goal each in the game.
Both teams jumped off to a quick start, creating scoring
opportunities on both ends of the ice in the opening minutes of
play. As the period continued, Colgate (9-17-3, 6-10-2 ECAC) held
the advantage in shots but it was the Golden Knights that got on
the scoreboard first at the 8:18 mark to take the 1-0 lead. The
first goal gave Clarkson an offensive surge, outshooting the
Raiders 13-1 over the next few minutes and finding a second goal at
the 16:51 mark. Less than a minute later, Colgate won the
possession off a faceoff and found the net shortly after with a
shot from Hootz at the 17:29 mark, reducing the scoring margin to
one and put the score at 2-1. Senior Jessi
Waters was credited with the assist.
After a fruitful end to the first period, both teams came into the
second 20 minutes of play determined to find the net once again.
The Raiders attacked first, outshooting the Knights 5-1 in the
first few minutes of play. The team eventually found a power play
goal at the 5:14 mark courtesy of Simpson, to tie the score at 2-2.
Both teams continued to battle it out on the ice but as the period
came to an end, it was clear that the final frame would be the
decider.
The third period was unlike the first two. Despite taking a total
of 26 shots, with Colgate holding a slight advantage with 14 shots,
neither team could find the net, sending the game into overtime.
Neither team was able to secure the win in the additional five
minutes of play, resulting in the Raiders third and Clarkson's
fifth overtime game of the season.
Junior Kimberly
Sass had 39 saves for Colgate while Erica Howe had 38 for
the Knights.
The team will resume play next weekend when it hosts ECAC
opponents Yale and Brown in its final two home games of the regular
season.
