Raiders Fall to St. Lawrence in League Play
CANTON, N.Y. (2/4/11) – The Colgate
women's hockey team dropped its first ECAC Hockey game of the
weekend, 4-2, when it fell to St. Lawrence on Friday night. This
was the team's seventh league setback of the season.
Sophomore Brittany
Phillips and freshman Rachel
Walsh scored a goal each for the Raiders. Both
Walsh and Phillips as well as sophomore Jenna
Klynstra, who had two assists, registered two
points apiece in the game.
The Saints got off to an aggressive start, firing a series of
shots in the opening minutes of the game. Colgate (9-17-2, 6-10-1
ECAC) soon returned the favor, creating some scoring opportunities
but could not find the net either. As the period progressed, both
teams continued to search for a first goal, but it was St. Lawrence
that found success twice to take the lead. The Saints found their
first goal on a breakaway at the 12:15 mark and then again with a
shot from the blue line at the 17:49 mark to take the 2-0 lead.
In the second frame, St. Lawrence got off to a productive start
scoring its third goal just under four minutes into the period to
put the score at 3-0. Colgate answered back with its first goal of
the game at the 9:42 mark, when Phillips received a wide-open pass
in the crease and lifted it past Maxie Weisz to put the score at
3-1. Walsh and Klynstra were credited with the assists. Not
discouraged, the Saints then came back and scored a fourth goal
minutes later to end the period with a 4-1 advantage.
Despite finding a second goal just 3:26 into the final frame with
a one-time shot from Walsh that beat Weisz with the help of
Phillips and Klynstra, the Raiders could not push past St.
Lawrence, eventually falling to the Saints 4-2.
The team will resume play tomorrow when it travels to Clarkson for
matchup at 4 p.m. in Potsdam, N.Y.
