Raiders Skate to Tie with Syracuse

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (1/4/11) – The Colgate women's ice hockey team played to its first tie of the season against Syracuse, 4-4, on Tuesday night. This was the Raiders' final non-conference game of the season.

Sophomores Jenna Klynstra and Brittany Phillips recorded three points each for the Raiders. Klynstra had two goals and one assist while Phillips had three assists. Freshman Rachel Walsh and classmate Jocelyn Simpson also registered one goal apiece, with Walsh also adding an assist for two points.

Colgate (6-12-1, 3-5 ECAC) came out to an offensive start, firing the first shot of the game and creating several scoring opportunities, but could not find the net. Syracuse soon found its momentum, taking a flurry of shots on net during a series of power plays. However, it was Colgate that was able to find success first during a power play at the 16:02 mark. Klynstra connected on a pass from sophomore Phillips and slammed it home to give the Raiders the 1-0 lead going into the second period. Walsh was also credited with the assist.

The Orange came out strong in the second frame, scoring an equalizer just 2:35 into play to tie the game at 1-1 with a power-play goal. Both teams continued to play aggressively but it was Syracuse that found the net once again at the 11:46 to take the lead for the first time in the game.

With a one-goal deficit going into the final period, the Raiders came out looking to score. After ten minutes of hard work, the team was finally rewarded with an equalizer from Simpson with assists from Phillips and junior Amanda Kirwan to put the score at 2-2. Now on fire, Colgate continued its offensive momentum, scoring twice more at the 15:18 and 17:52 marks both off power plays, to take a two-goal lead with just two minutes left. The first was a goal by Walsh with help from Klynstra and senior Jessi Waters and the second was scored by Klynstra who was assisted by Phillips and Waters once again. However, despite a 4-2 disadvantage in the final minutes of play, Syracuse was able to find two late goals at the 18:29 and 19:18 marks to tie the game once more and send it into overtime.

Both teams battled it out in the overtime period, forcing both goaltenders to make one impressive save after another. But after five minutes of play both teams were forced to settle with a 4-4 tie.

Colgate finished 3-of-7 on the power play, while holding the Orange to just one goal in eight opportunities. Senior Lisa Plenderleith and junior Kimberly Sass both saw time in net for the Raiders. Plenderleith had 10 saves while Sass had 18. Kallie Billadeau had 28 saves for the Orange.

The team will resume play this weekend with two ECAC Hockey games on the road. Colgate will first travel to Providence, R.I. for a matchup against Brown on Friday, Jan. 7 at 7 p.m. before taking on Yale on Saturday, Jan. 8 at 4 p.m. in New Haven, Conn.
