Dutchwomen Edged at Home by Vermont
SCHENECTADY, NY- The Union Dutchwomen ice hockey team returned to home ice following a three week layoff and had several scoring opportunities in the waning seconds of the third period but could not convert as they fell to visiting Vermont 2-1 on Saturday afternoon.
The Catamounts pulled out to an early 2-0 lead in the first
period despite being outshot by Union 7-6.
Following a scoreless second period, Union finally got on the
board at 10:06 of the third period. Lauren
Cromartie's shot went wide of the goal and rebounded back
behind the net. Marissa
Gentile fired the rebound on the right side of the goal
and the puck slid past Catamount goaltender Kelci Lanthier for the
score.
With 1:30 left to play in the game, Union pulled goaltender
Alana
Marcinko for the extra attacker. After the
Dutchwomen called a timeout, a tripping penalty on Vermont's Emily
Walsh gave Union a six-on-four advantage. Ashley Johnson and
Lauren
Hoffman's shots were both off target and with 22 seconds
left, Vermont's Hannah Westbrook was called for boarding which gave
Union a six-on-three advantage. The Dutchwomen continued to attack
the goal but Chelsey
Heinhuis's two shots were wide and blocked and the
Catamounts held on for the victory.
Marcinko had 12 saves in goal for Union. Lanthier made 22
saves for Vermont.
Union led the game in shots 23-14. It was the first time this
season that they have led in shots but did not win.
The teams return to the ice tomorrow afternoon at 2 pm.
