Dartmouth's Offensive Outburst Ends Four-Game Losing Streak
HANOVER, N.H. --After going 19 days without playing a game, the Dartmouth women's hockey team exploded for nine goals in a victory over Connecticut at Thompson Arena on Saturday. The Big Green scored five straight goals in the second period to turn a 1-1 tie into a blow out. Dartmouth added three goals in the third period to secure a 9-2 win. Dartmouth stopped a four-game losing streak and improved to 7-5-0 overall. The loss dropped UConn to 7-11-1.
Each team scored a first-period goal, but in the second things got interesting.
Senior Amanda Trunzo (Andover, Minn.) gathered the puck behind the Huskies' net and fired the puck to a slashing Sasha Nanji (Markham, Ont.). Nanji took a quick shot that found the back of the net. It started a run of five consecutive goals over a span of seven minutes.
UConn scored a goal with just over two minutes remaining in the second period when Maude Blain scored on a power play off an assist from Casey Knajdek. The Big Green scored three more goals in the third period to end the scoring. Trunzo led the squad with two goals and two assists. She has scored eight goals on the season. Nanji scored two goals to give her 10 this season.
There were a couple of career firsts for Dartmouth players in the game. Freshman Ali Winkel (Espanola, Ont.) scored her first collegiate goal and sophomore Margaux Sharp (Carleton Place, Ont.) scored the first goal of her career. In all, seven different Big Green skaters tallied a goal and 12 different players recorded a point. Dartmouth took advantage of power play opportunities, scoring goals three out of four times. The Huskies went 1-3 on the power play.
It marked the most goals Dartmouth has scored since it earned a 9-1 victory at Brown on Jan. 10, 2009. The victory marked the first win for the Big Green since it defeated Providence on Nov. 16. That was also the last time the team played at home.
UConn and Dartmouth play again at Thompson Arena on Sunday at 2 p.m.
