Tigers Blank Boston College
PRINCETON (12/31/10) - The Princeton women's hockey didn't seem to mind a 20-day layoff as the Tigers returned from the holiday break to shut out fifth-ranked Boston College 3-0 on New Year's Eve at Hobey Baker Rink.
Princeton, which last played the weekend of Dec. 10-11 when it swept a two-game series from Syracuse got off to a good start and went ahead for good at the 8:25 mark of the first period. The goal came off the rush as Corey Stearns and Julie Johnson skated into the offensive zone on a 2 on 1. Stearns drew the defender and then fed Johnson who scored her second goal of the season. Caroline Park also added her first assist of the season on the goal.
Princeton added two more goals in the second period to go ahead 3-0. Sally Butler scored her team-leading seventh goal at 6:05 of the period, again on an odd-man rush, roofing a shot over the shoulder of BC netminder Kiera Kingston. Denna Laing added an assist on the goal.
Johnson then gave Princeton a three-goal lead with her second goal of the game at 12:26 on the power play. Princeton sent out a power-play unit that featured five forwards and the group converted on a great set of passes that ended with Johnson sliding a shot under the pads of Kingston. Assists on the goal went to Olivia Mucha and Butler.
The Princeton offense gave Rachel Weber all the scoring she needed as Weber stopped all 24 Eagle shots to register the win. Weber is now 5-6-1 and has three shutouts. Kingston made 24 saves in the loss.
The win was Princeton's fourth in a row and was its third shutout in the four-game span. Princeton is now 7-10-1 overall while Boston College falls to 11-3-4. Princeton resumes its ECAC Hockey schedule on Monday afternoon at 1 p.m. against Quinnipiac.
The Princeton and Boston College rosters were both depleted as each team sent representatives to the USA Hockey Training Camp in Minnesota. Sasha Sherry was there for Princeton.
