Cornell Remains Perfect with Win at Princeton
PRINCETON, N.J. -- Brianne Jenner had a pair of goals and an
assist to lead the Cornell women's hockey team to its second
straight 5-1 victory to open ECAC Hockey play, defeating Princeton
on Saturday afternoon at Hobey Baker Rink in Princeton,
N.J.
Catherine White and Chelsea Karpenko had a goal and an assist,
while Karlee Overguard and Alyssa Gagliardi both notched a pair of
assists on the night for the Big Red (4-0-0, 2-0-0 ECAC Hockey).
Rebecca Johnston scored a goal, her third straight game with a
goal, and Lauriane Rougeau tacked on an assist of her own for the
Big Red.
Paula Romanchuk scored the lone goal of the night for the Tigers
(1-3, 1-1 ECAC Hockey), with Corey Stearns adding an assist on the
play.
Cornell goaltender Amanda Mazzotta made 18 saves for the victory,
with Princeton netminder Cassie Seguin stopping 25 shots in the
loss for the Tigers. Both teams were perfect on the penalty kill,
with Cornell scoreless in three chances and Princeton held off the
board in four power-play chances.
Cornell needed just 1:24 to take control of the game with Johnston
tallying her third goal of the year with Jenner and Gagliardi both
collecting assists. Karpenko made the score 2-0 at the game's 9:08
mark with her third marker of the season from White and Overguard,
and Jenner added the night's third goal at 12:50 from Gagliardi to
give Cornell a decisive 3-0 lead heading into the first
intermission.
Jenner struck for her second goal of the night at the 11:03 mark
of the second period, poking home a rebound from a shot by Rougeau,
and White added the fifth goal of the game for Cornell with 1:58 to
play in the period, capitalizing on assists from Karpenko and
Overguard.
Princeton avoided the shutout when Romanchuk scored her second
goal of the year at the 5:12 mark of the third period.
The win sets up one of the most anticipated games of the season,
as Cornell puts its undefeated record on the line against
Mercyhurst on Tuesday in a 7 p.m. contest at Lynah Rink. The Big
Red defeated the Lakers in the last time the two teams met in the
2010 NCAA semifinals in Minneapolis, Minn., 3-2, in overtime.
