HAMDEN, Conn. -- The Cornell women's hockey team struck for five
unanswered goals to take a 5-1 victory at Quinnipiac on Friday
night in the ECAC Hockey opener for both teams. Jessica Campbell
scored a pair of goals while Chelsea Karpenko and Rebecca Johnston
both added a goal and an assist for the Big Red.
Cornell (3-0, 1-0 ECAC Hockey) also got a goal from Laura Fortino,
while Brianne Jenner, Amanda Young and Karlee Overguard each had a
pair of assists. Amanda Mazzotta made 24 saves on the night, as
Cornell went 2-for-2 on the power play.
For Quinnipiac (5-2-1, 0-1 ECAC Hockey), Kate Wheeler scored the
game's first goal, with Kelly Babstock and Erin Uden Johansson
picking up assists. Victoria Vigilanti made 39 saves in the losing
effort for the Bobcats, who went scoreless in six power-play
chances.
The Bobcats got in the scoring column at the 16:08 mark of the
game, but Cornell needed just 1:36 to tie the score with Johnston's
second marker of the year, a power-play goal. Then, 1:08 later,
Fortino scored what would be the game-winner, scoring her first of
the year with Overguard and Jenner tallying assists with Cornell's
second power-play chance of the night.
In the second period, Campbell scored her first of two, with
Johnston and Jenner both picking up assists. Karpenko then added to
the lead at the 16:08 mark of the game, with Young recording her
first assist of the night. Campbell then finished off the scoring
with a short-handed goal at the 14:26 mark of the third period,
with Young and Overguard springing the freshman for the man-down
tally.
Cornell returns to action on Saturday afternoon, taking on
Princeton in a 4 p.m. contest at Hobey Baker Rink in Princeton,
N.J.
