Sass Leads Raiders with Second Straight Shutout
HAMILTON, N.Y. (1/29/11) – The Colgate
women's hockey team recorded its second shutout win of the weekend
when it defeated Union 1-0 on Saturday afternoon in Starr Rink.
This was the team's sixth ECAC win and fifth shutout of the
season.
Junior Kimberly
Sass recorded her fifth career and second shutout win of
the weekend against Union while her classmate Kristi-Lyn
Pollock scored the game-winning goal for the Raiders.
The first period started off even between the two teams as they
attacked each other's net. As the game progressed, it was Union
that began to generate its offense first, firing a series of shots
at Colgate's net but did not find success. Feeling the pressure,
the Raiders responded by turning the tables and forcing the
Dutchwomen to play defense. Their efforts soon paid off with a
short-handed goal at the 17:31 mark. Senior Hannah
Milan fired a shot that hit Kate Gallagher's pads.
Pollock pounced on the rebound and knocked it past Gallagher to
give Colgate the 1-0 lead.
In the second frame it was the Raiders that started off attacking
Union's net, creating a series of scoring opportunities but could
not find a second goal. The tone remained the same throughout the
period as Colgate outshot the Dutchwomen 15-4, and despite a
near-goal opportunity at the 17:41 when sophomore Brittany
Phillips hit the pipe, the period remained scoreless.
In the final frame both teams came out hungry for a goal, creating
numerous scoring opportunities on both ends of the ice. But like
the second period, neither team was able to find the net, resulting
in the Raiders defeating Union 1-0 for the second time this
season.
Sass had 17 saves for Colgate while Gallagher had 31 for the
Dutchwomen.
The Raiders will resume play next weekend when the team travels to
Canton, N.Y. for a matchup against St. Lawrence on Friday, Feb. 4
before facing Clarkson on Saturday, Feb. 5 in Potsdam, N.Y.
