Raiders Edged by Orange
HAMILTON, N.Y. (11/23/10) - The Colgate women’s ice hockey
team suffered a nail-biting 4-3 setback to Syracuse on Tuesday
night in Starr Rink. Despite rallying back and taking the lead at
one point in the second period, the Raiders could not find a fourth
goal to send the game into overtime.
Sophomore Brittany Phillips (Lauder, Man.) had an impressive
three-point performance with two goals and one assist for Colgate
(5-10, 2-4 ECAC) while junior Amanda Kirwan (Mississauga, Ont.) had
one goal and one assist.
The first 20 minutes of play started off very physical with both
teams trying to assert themselves on the ice. As the period
progressed, it was Syracuse that became the aggressor, attacking
Colgate’s net and eventually finding success at the 2:55 mark
when Carah Johnson slipped a rebound past Kimberly Sass (East
Amherst, N.Y.) to give the Orange the 1-0 lead. The Raiders
answered back six minutes later at the 8:58 mark when Phillips
received a pass from Rachel Walsh (Calgary, Alta.) and used her
speed to skate past her defender. Phillips then passed the puck up
to Kirwan who slammed it home to give Colgate the equalizer.
The second period was busy for both teams. Syracuse got on the
board first once again with a goal similar to their first at the
3:14 mark courtesy of Isabel Menard, to give the Orange the 2-1
advantage. However, the lead was short-lived with Colgate returning
the favor two minutes later. Phillips picked up a rebound and
blasted the puck past Jenesica Drinkwater to even the score.
Freshman Shannon Doyle (Baldwin, Ont.) and Kirwan were credited
with the assists.
Both teams continued to search for a goal in the second frame,
speeding up the pace of the game as they created one
opportunity after another on both ends of the ice. This time
however, it was the Raiders that found success first with a power
play goal at the 11:03 mark. Senior Jessi Waters (Menlo Park,
Calif.) shot the puck, Klynstra picked up the rebound and passed it
up to Phillips, who fired it into the net to give Colgate its first
lead of the game, 3-2. Unfortunately, just over a minute later, the
Orange found another goal to tie the score for the third time
in the game.
Syracuse then went on to score once more in the third period to
give them their first win in the all-time series, which Colgate now
leads 3-1.
Sass had 26 saves for the Raiders while Syracuse’s
Drinkwater had 27.
The Raiders will travel to Erie, Pa. next for a matchup against
No. 4 Mercyhurst on Saturday, Nov. 27 at 2 p.m.
