Clarkson Suffers Narrow Defeat at BU
Boston, MA - Goals from Gabrielle
Kosziwka (Limehouse, ONT) and Danielle
Skirrow (Trenton, ONT) of nearly were enough to
topple fifth-ranked Boston University, but the Terriers took
advantage of three penalties on the Clarkson
University Women's Hockey team to hold off the
Golden Knights, 3-2,
in non-league action Saturday afternoon.
The Golden Knights dropped a pair of one-goal contests on the
weekend to fall to 1-6-1 overall, while the Terriers improved to
6-1-0. Clarkson opens ECAC Hockey play next weekend when it hosts
Union College and Rensselaer.
The Knights and Boston University played even in the first period
as Clarkson held a narrow 9-8 edge in shots in the first 20
minutes. More importantly, the Green and Gold were the first to
tally when they scored midway through the stanza. Kosziwka scored
her first of the season at the 10:26 mark with assists going to
Amanda Lucky (Kanata, ONT) and Daris
Tendler (Verwood, SASK).
Boston controlled the final 40 minutes, out shooting the Knights
43-8. Two of the 19 shots in the second period from the Terriers
found the back of the net. Tara Watchorn tied the score at
5:29, and Taylor Holze scored the go-ahead goal with just a minute
remaining in the frame. A power-play marker at the start of the
third period by Marie-Philip Poulin proved to be the game-winner,
but Clarkson was far from finished. Despite trailing 24-4 in
shots in the period, and having to overcome three penalties that
put the Knights down a skater, Clarkson was able to come
back to within a goal early on as Danielle Skirrow scored
her team-high third of the season at 4:42. Assists were
awarded to Juana Baribeau (Amos, QUE) and
Carly Mercer (Exeter, ONT). Any hope of a comeback
was squashed late when the Knights were whistled for a penalty with
2:30 remaining in the game.
Senior Lauren Dahm (Baldwinsville, NY) posted a
career-high 48 saves against the Terriers, and Kerrin Sperry made
15 stops for Boston. Clarkson was scoreless in five power-play
chances, while Boston went 1-for-4.
