PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Sophomore Taylor Horton scored at 2:12 of
overtime to lift the Rensselaer women's hockey team to a 3-2 win
over Providence at Schneider Arena on Friday. With the
come-from-behind victory, which is RPI's first win of the season,
the Engineers move to 1-3-2. The Friars are now 5-2-0
overall.
Locked in a 2-2 battle after regulation, Horton (St. Thomas,
ON/Bluewater Hawks) sealed the Engineers first win of the season
after she took a feed from junior Jill Vandegrift (St. Paul,
MN/Minnesota Thoroughbreds) and sent the puck past Friars netminder
Genevieve Lacasse (Scarborough, ON/Marian).
Providence opened the game's scoring as junior Abby Gauthier
(Lynn, MA/St. Mary's) scored off a pass from Leigh Reily
(Lexington, MA/Lexington) at 12:21 of the first period. The
Friars added to their lead in the second stanza when Kate Bacon
(Chanhassen, MN/Benilde St. Maragret's School) tallied just 44
seconds into the frame off an assist from Gauthier.
The Engineers mounted a comeback in the final period as junior
Alisa Harrison (Vienna, VA/Washington Pride) made it a one-goal
game (2-1) at the 48 second mark from rookie Jordan Smelker
(Anchorage, AK/Team Alaska 19U).
Freshman Toni Sanders (York, PA/Susquehanna U19) then made it
2-all less than a minute later, scoring her first career goal off
an assist from junior Kristen Jakubowski (Lake Placid, NY/The
Northwood School). The helper marked Jakubowski's first
career point.
In goal, senior Sonja van der Bliek (Toronto, ON/Toronto Jr.
Aeros) stopped 27 of 29 shots for the Engineers, while Lacasse made
24 saves in the loss for the Friars.
Rensselaer is back in action on Sunday when it travels to Boston
for a 1pm matchup against Northeastern University. Providence
is back on the ice on Saturday, hosting Princeton in a 4pm
contest.
