Bobcats Earn Draw Against Boston College
HAMDEN, Conn. – Junior forward Kate Wheeler’s
(Oakville, Ontario) two goals, including one late in the third
period, helped the Quinnipiac University women’s ice hockey
team earn a 3-3 tie against #7 Boston College on Friday night at
the TD Bank Sports Center. Quinnipiac’s overall record now
stands at 5-1-1 while Boston College (2-0-0 Hockey East) obtains a
4-0-1 overall mark.
“Being a young team, we had to fight back,” said head
coach Rick Seeley. “I thought we took it to them in the third
and overtime periods.”
Boston College jumped out to an early 1-0 lead just 33 seconds
into the contest, as senior forward Kelli Stack scored her
team-leading seventh goal of the season. Freshmen forwards Taylor
Wasylk and Danielle Doherty were each credited with an assist on
the play.
The Eagles took a 2-0 advantage on a goal from junior center
Danielle Welch at 11:59, her first goal of the season. Junior
forward Mary Restuccia and sophomore forward Kristina Brown each
tallied an assist on the score.
Quinnipiac scored just over three minutes later at the 15:06 mark on Wheeler’s first goal of the game. She was assisted by freshman forward Kelly Babstock (Mississauga, Ontario) on the play.
The Eagles pushed the lead to 3-1 at the 2:30 mark of the second
period, as freshman forward Taylor Wasylk netted her fourth goal of
the season. She was assisted by junior defender Alison Szlosek.
The Bobcats continued to fight back and were rewarded with a goal
at the 16:10 mark of the second period off the stick of freshman
forward Erica Uden Johansson (Sundsvall, Sweden). Junior defender
Bethany Dymarczyk (Hamden, Conn.) was credited with her seventh
assist of the season, while Babstock earned her second assist of
the night.
Quinnipiac pulled even on Wheeler’s second goal of the
evening at the 17:34 mark of the third period. Acting as a screen
in front of the net, Wheeler deflected a shot by Boston
College’s netminder Molly Schaus and into the net to provide
the game with its final score, 3-3. Sophomore defender Felica
Vieweg (Port Orange, Fla.) earned her third assist of the season on
the goal. Babstock also received an assist on the play, earning her
third helper of the night and team-leading 12th assist
overall. The goal places Wheeler in a two-way tie for second on the
team with five goals scored.
Bobcats’ sophomore goaltender Victoria Vigilanti
(Woodbridge, Ontario) turned away 25 shots on the evening, while
her counterpart Schaus made 23 saves on the night.
Quinnipiac once again took advantage of its power play
opportunities, as it went 2 for 5 on the night. This complemented
the Bobcats stingy penalty kill unit, as Boston College
unsuccessfully went 0 for 6 on its power plays.
Quinnipiac returns to action on Sunday, Oct. 29 at 7 p.m. to face
Cornell University at the TD Bank Sports Center in Hamden,
Conn.
