Saints Earn Weekend Sweep With Win Over Brown

Nov. 20: St. Lawrence University first-year student Bailey Habscheid and sophomore Kayla Sullivan each scored two goals, while junior Alley Bero added the game-winner and two assists as the Saints' women's hockey team dropped Brown University in Providence, RI on Saturday afternoon.

The win gave St. Lawrence a weekend sweep in ECAC Hockey play, moving the team to 6-6-2 (3-2-0) on the year.  Meanwhile, Brown falls to 2-4-2 (1-3-2) on the season after being outshot 45-31.

"We scored some timely power play goals and had some kids step up with a very short bench after Karell (Emard) went down to an injury," said St. Lawrence head coach Chris Wells.  "We were in a fast-paced game with Brown who played with great energy."

Despite outshooting the Bears 13-6 in the first stanza, the Saints were held scoreless by Aubree Moore throughout 20:00 minutes.  Her play allowed the home team to take a 1-0 lead at 1:38 of the second period, when Samantha Woodward scored on St. Lawrence first-year goalie Caitlyn Lahonen.  Kelly Kittredge and Erica Farrer assisted on the game's opening goal.

The Scarlet and Brown would respond to the Brown goal in style, as the team reeled off three goals to hold a 3-1 advantage after two periods of play.  Habscheid evened the scoring at 1-1 at the 5:52 mark of the second period on the power play, and then gave her team a 2-1 lead less than five minutes later at 10:23.  Bero, who assisted on each of the first two St. Lawrence goals, then scored a power play goal at 12:12 to cap the second period scoring with the Saints up 3-1.  Sophomore Brooke Fernandez and first-year Dayle Wilkinson assisted on the eventual game-winner.

Sullivan would put the game away in the opening half of the third period with back-to-back goals at 4:25 and 9:05 that put the Saints ahead by a comfortable margin, 5-1.  Sullivan's first goal, which was assisted by senior Lauren Brozowski, chased Moore from the game with the visitors up 4-1.  Sullivan then greeted Brown's back-up goalie, Katie Jamieson, with a goal from Fernandez and senior assistant captain Kirsten Roach for the 5-1 lead less than five minutes later.

Though Alena Polenska would cut Brown's deficit to three at 5-2 with an even-strength goal at 11:03 of the third period, Lahonen would make 11 saves in the third period to secure the victory.

Lahonen finished with 29 saves to get the victory while Moore suffered the loss despite making 33 stops.  Jamieson added seven saves in her time between the pipes.  St. Lawrence was perfect on the power play (2-for-2), while Brown was held scoreless with the player advantage (0-for-1).

The Saints will be in action again on Tuesday, November 23 when the team visits the University of Vermont for a non-conference game beginning at 7:00pm.
