Colgate Secures Win Over Princeton
HAMILTON, N.Y. (11/20/10) – The Colgate
women’s ice hockey team secured its second ECAC Hockey win
and second shut out of the season when it powered past Princeton
2-0 on Saturday afternoon in Starr Rink. Freshman Jocelyn Simpson
(Shorewood, Ill.) and sophomore Jenna Klynsra (Edmonton, Alta.)
scored a goal each for the Raiders while freshman Shannon Doyle
(Baldwin, Ont.) dished out two assists.
Princeton got off to a fast start in the first period, firing a
flurry of shots at the Raiders’ net but were denied by junior
Kimberly Sass (East Amerst, N.Y.) who knocked away one shot after
another. However, despite outshooting Colgate 17-11 in the first 20
minutes of play, it was the Raiders who got on the board first at
the 12:15 mark. Doyle connected on a pass from Jessi Waters (Menlo
Park, Calif.) that hit Rachel Weber’s pads. Simpson then
picked up the rebound and fired it home to give Colgate the 1-0
lead.
After a scoreless second period in which Princeton held the
advantage in shots once again, both teams came into the third frame
looking for a goal for different reasons. Princeton was looking for
an equalizer while the Raiders were looking for a cushion goal.
Despite the Tigers outshooting Colgate once again, it was the
Raiders that found their goal at the 18:13 mark of the final
period. Klynstra caught Weber outside the crease during
Princeton’s attempt to add an extra player, and shot the puck
into the net from across the ice to score the team’s second
and final goal of the game. Doyle was credited with the assist.
Sass, who recorded her second shutout win of the season, had an
impressive 37 saves for the Raiders while Weber had 23 for
Princeton.
Colgate (5-9, 2-4 ECAC) will end its seven-game homestand on
Tuesday, Nov. 23 with a non-conference matchup against Syracuse at
7 p.m. in Starr Rink.
