Clarkson Snaps Saints Streak
Junior center Brittany Mulligan scored two goals and goaltender Erica Howe made 27 saves as Clarkson University's women's hockey team snapped St. Lawrence University's unbeaten streak with a 4-1 win at Cheel Arena on Tuesday night.
The Saints went into Tuesday's game riding a four-game unbeaten
streak (3-0-1) which included two of their most prolific offensive
games of the season, a 4-2 win over Niagara and a 7-3 win over
Boston College. While the Saints had an edge in shots on goal and
actually had more scoring chances than the Knights, Howe and
the Clarkson defense were able to keep the puck out of the net.
Tuesday's game was the third meeting of the season between the two North Country rivals. St. Lawrence and Clarkson tied 1-1 in a non-league game at Cheel in October and the Knights came from behind for a 3-2 win at Appleton the next night. Clarkson is now 5-2-1 in the last eight games against the Saints.
"Clarkson caught a couple of bounces that led to goals, and we had some great chances that we weren't able to finish on," said Saint coach Chris Wells. "I thought both teams worked very hard...we've had three pretty good games with them this season, and I'm sure the next one will be the same."
The Saints slip to 4-6-2 overall and 1-2-0 in the ECAC while Clarkson is now 5-7-1 and unbeaten in league play at 3-0-0. The Saints will return to action with a road series at Yale and Brown Friday and Saturday.
St. Lawrence opened the scoring on the game's first power play opportunity as first year wing Bailey Habscheid put the puck past Clarkson goalie Erica Howe from point blank range for her third of the year with Vanessa Emond and Jamie Goldsmith assisting at 13:22. Clarkson pulled even on a shorthanded goal just 2:17 later when the puck hopped over a Saint stick near the Saint blue line and junior center Brittany Mulligan gathered it in and went in alone on Saint goalie Caitlyn Lahonen, scoring her first of the season.
SLU had two good chances to take a lead in the second period as Vanessa Emond twice had shorthanded breakaways, but she shot just wide of the post on the first and was stopped by Howe on the second. The Knights took a 2-1 lead at 12:45 of the second when senior wing Melissa Waldie put back a rebound of a shot by Gabrielle Kosziwka for her fourth goal of the year with Hailey Wood also assisting. The Saints made several bids to retie the game, but had a pair of grade "A" scoring chances go wide and another clanged off the post. Clarkson had a 13-4 edge in shots on goal in the second period, but the total shot attempts were 18-16.
Clarkson made it a 3-1 game 4:56 into the third period when Mulligan scored her second of the night as she picked up a puck which bounced off a Saint defender's stick and again walked in alone on Lahonen, putting the shot between Lahonen's stick and the post.
The Knights iced the win when junior defender Kelly Gillanders scored an empty net shorthanded goal from her own goal mouth with 2:34 to play as the Saints pulled Lahonen for an extra attacker on a power play with 3:41 left in the game.
St. Lawrence finished with a 28-24 edge in shots on goal as Howe made 27 saves in the game including 14 in the third period when the Saints had a 14-5 shot advantage. Lahonen finished with 20 saves for the Saints, who finished the game one for five on the power play while Clarkson was scoreless in four power play chances.
