Raiders Edged by Friars in Overtime Thriller
HAMILTON, N.Y. – The Colgate
women’s hockey team suffered its second setback of the season
on Saturday afternoon when it fell to No. 10 Providence 2-1 in an
overtime thriller. Despite holding a 1-0 lead for the first two
periods, the Raiders were unable to secure the win.
Colgate (2-2) got on the scoreboard first at the 16:15 mark of the
first period when freshman Rachel Walsh (Calgary, Alta.) recorded
her first collegiate goal after deflecting a shot past Providence
goaltender Genevieve Lacasse to give the Raiders the 1-0 lead.
Walsh’s goal was assisted by sophomore Amanda Kirwan
(Mississauga, Ont.) and senior Jacquie Colborne (Calgary,
Alta.).
The Raiders continued to hold the lead through the second period,
outshooting the Friars 17-6, but were unable to convert any of
their opportunities.
In the third it was Providence’s turn to outshoot Colgate
with the Friars finally tying the score 1-1 midway through the
period off a power-play goal by Nicole Anderson. Anderson was
assisted by Jennifer Friedman and Ashley Cottrell to force the game
into overtime.
Providence’s Alyse Ruff scored the game-winning goal 3:22
into overtime and was assited by Friedman and Kate Bacon.
Senior goaltender Lisa Plenderleith (Ajax, Ont.) made 38 saves for
Colgate, while Lacasse recorded 30 for the Friars.
Colgate will complete its six-game homestand with a two-game set
against Wayne State on Oct. 22 and Oct. 23 at Starr
Rink.
