Raiders Top UConn
HAMILTON, N.Y. – Junior goaltender
Kimberly Sass (East Amherst, N.Y.) made 27 saves and four other
Raiders recorded a two-point night as Colgate topped Connecticut,
5-3, Friday at Starr Rink. This was Colgate's second-straight win
over the Huskies and first-ever at home.
Connecticut (1-3) struck first just 2:30 into the opening period
as Brittany Murphy deflected a shot by Kelly Horan past Sass.
Rebecca Hewett also assisted on the goal. The Raiders answered back
six minutes later as freshman Jocelyn Simpson (Shorewood, Ill.)
recorded her first collegiate goal by sliding the puck past
Alexandra Garcia to tie the score 1-1. Simpson’s goal came
during a power play and was assisted by sophomores Jordan Brickner
(Lake Forest, Ill.) and Jessica Hootz (Edmonton, Alta.).
Colgate (2-1) then took its first lead of the game two-minutes
later as senior Hannah Milan (Great Barrington, Mass.) found the
back of the net for the first time this season to give the Raiders
a 2-1 lead at the intermission. Milan’s goal was assisted by
senior Jessi Waters (Menlo Park, Calif.) and freshman Taylor Volpe
(Tustin, Calif.). Colgate outshot the Huskies 13-10 in the opening
period.
The Raiders extend their lead to 3-1 midway through the second
period as Hootz recorded the second power-play goal of the game,
this time in 5-on-3 fashion, as she wristed a shot from the top of
the circle past Garcia’s glove. Hootz was assisted by Simpson
and Brickner.
The score remained the same until Connecticut’s Jennifer
Chaisson scored unassisted five minutes into the third period to
trim Colgate’s lead to 3-2. But the Raiders again responded
rapidly as sophomore Jenna Klynstra (Edmonton, Alta.) scored her
first goal of the season a minute later to give Colgate a two-goal
cushion, 4-2.
Connecticut would score one more time with 1:42 remaining to trim
the lead to 4-3, but senior Jacquie Colborne (Calgary, Alta.) would
seal the victory for Colgate with an empty net goal in the closing
seconds.
Colgate finished 2-for-7 on the power play and 6-for-6 on the
penalty kill. Sass recorded 27 saves to improve to 2-0 on the
season, while Garcia recoded 27 saves for the Huskies.
Colgate will return to action tomorrow Saturday, Oct.16 as it
hosts No. 10 Providence at 3 p.m. at Starr Rink.
