Sophomores Lead Colgate Over Niagara
HAMILTON, N.Y. (11/13/10) - The Colgate
women’s ice hockey team secured its fourth win of the season
when it defeated Niagara 4-1 on Saturday afternoon at Starr Rink.
Sophomore Brittany Phillips (Lauder, Man.) had one goal and one
assist for the Raiders while her classmates Jordan Brickner (Lake
Forest, Ill.) and Jessica Hootz (Edmonton, Alta.) had two assists
apiece.
Colgate (4-8, 1-3 ECAC) started the game with a bang, outshooting
the Purple Egales 12-6 in the first 20 minutes of play and finding
the net at the 18:44 mark from senior Jessi Waters (Menlo Park,
Calif.). She picked up a loose puck in the crease and snuck it past
Niagara’s Sarah Moses to give the Raiders the 1-0 lead at the
end of the first period. Classmate Hannah Milan (Great Barrington,
Mass.) and Brickner were credited with the assists.
In the second frame, the Raiders came out with the same fire they
had in the first period, finding an early second goal at the 2:27
mark to put the score at 2-0. Hootz fired a shot at the net, Moses
made the save, and Phillips pounced on the rebound and hammered it
home. Sophomore Jenna Klynstra (Edmonton, Alta.) also had an assist
in the play.
The Raiders then went on to score twice more in the third period.
Freshman Rachel Walsh (Calgary, Alta.) scored the first goal at the
12:17 mark with the help of Phillips and Hootz, and freshman
Jocelyn Simpson (Shorewood, Ill.) scored the second at the 18:04
mark with assists from Brickner and classmate Shannon Doyle
(Baldwin, Ont.).
Niagara finally answered back with a late goal from Erica
Owczarczak at the 18:52 mark, but could not make up the three-goal
deficit, resulting in Colgate winning the second game of the
two-game set and splitting the weekend.
The Raiders outshot the Purple Eagles 32-15. Junior Kimberly Sass
(East Amherst, N.Y.) had 14 saves while the Moses had 28 saves for
the Eagles.
Colgate will resume play next weekend when it hosts ECAC opponents
Quinnipiac and Princeton on Friday Nov. 19 and Saturday Nov. 20,
both at Starr Rink.
