Raiders Drop Home Contest To Niagara

HAMILTON, N.Y. (11/12/10) – Senior goaltender Lisa Plenderleith (Ajax, Ont.) made 28 saves but it wasn't enough as the Colgate women’s hockey team fell to Niagara 2-1 in the first of a two-game set Friday afternoon at Starr Rink. 

Niagara (3-7-1) got on the scoreboard first 5:38 into the first period when Natasha Friar received a nice pass from May Wilkerson to slide the puck past Plenderleith to give the Purple Eagles a 1-0 lead.
 
Colgate (3-8, 1-3 ECACH) answered back when sophomore Jenna Klynstra (Edmonton, Alta.) won the faceoff back to classmate Brittany Phillips (Lauder, Man) who beat netminder Jenni Bauer in the top shelf in the closing seconds of the period to tie the game 1-1.

The Raiders outshot the Niagara 12-5 in the second period, but both teams went scoreless, to take the 1-1 tie into the third.

Niagara was able to find the back of the net with 3:56 remaining in closing period off a goal from Kristen Richards to secure the 2-1 win.

Plenderleith made 28 saves for the Raiders, while Bauer recorded 22 for Niagara. Colgate finished 1-for-4 on the power play while Niagara went 0-for-4.

Colgate will play the second game of the series with Niagara tomorrow at 12 p.m. at Starr Rink.
