Dutchwomen Tie Black Bears
ORONO, ME- Maddy Norton scored her first career goal early in the third period, but host Maine later tied the game to send it into overtime and the teams settled for a 2-2 tie on Friday afternoon at Alfond Arena.
Maine would take the 1-0 lead at 15:43 the first
period on the power play. Danielle Ward collected the
puck on the endline right next to the left post. Her pass hit
Brittany Dougherty in the slot who then sent a pass to Dawn
Sullivan who scored on an open net high on the right post.
The Dutchwomen would answer back in the second period. Lauren
Cromartie controlled the puck in the left circle. She
stopped, spun around, and hit Lauren
Hoffman with a pass in the top of the left circle.
Hoffman then released a wrist shot that beat Maine goaltender
Candice Currier at 17:11. With 7:39 remaining in the second period,
the Bears had a chance to take the lead when Kayla Kaluzny broke in
all alone for Maine and put a move on Union's Alana
Marcinko and tried to stuff it home backhand but Marcinko
made a great save, laying out and getting her left leg-pad on the
puck to make the stop.
Just 17 seconds into the third period, Norton stole the puck
right in the slot of the Maine zone and immediately fired a wrist
shot by Currier to give Union the 2-1 lead. Maine would answer back
later at 15:47 in the period to tie the game at two all.
The game headed to overtime where Union's best chance for the
win came with 1:09 remaining. Kelly
Alyea got behind the defense and skated in on Currier.
She put a move on her and tried to stuff one home but Currier stuck
our her kicker and kicked the shot wide. It was the Dutchwomen's
only shot in the extra frame.
Maine led in shots 27-17. Union held a 8-7 advantage in the
third period.
Marcinko got the start in goal and made 25 saves for
Union. Currier had 15 saves for the Bears.
