Tigers Top Orange
PRINCETON (12/10/10) - The Princeton women's hockey team won its second straight game with a 4-2 triumph over Syracuse on Friday afternoon at Hobey Baker Rink. Sally Butler scored twice as Princeton built a 4-0 lead before the Orange scored twice late.
Princeton built its lead with goals in each of the first two periods. Butler scored her fourth of the season late in the first period shooting quickly off the rush and putting the puck just inside the far post. Defensemen Laura Martindale and Rose Alleva assisted on the opening goal.
Princeton made is 2-0 midway through the second period on a power-play goal from Denna Laing. Syracuse goaltender Jenesica Drinkwater made saves on shots from Sashe Sherry and Olivia Mucha, but the rebound laid in the crease for Laing to push across the line for her fourth goal.
Princeton made it 4-0 with two goals within a minute in the third period. First Paula Romanchuk blasted a shot past Drinkwater at 7:44 and 44 seconds later Butler stuffed in a rebound to make it 4-0. Heather Landry had an assist on the Romanchuk goal, while Laing and Mucha set up Butler's second tally.
Syracuse added the game's final two goals on the power play as Julie Rising scored twice. She put in the rebound of a blocked shot at 10:39 and deflected a point shot at 13:21.
Princeton outshot Syracuse 26-25 in the win. Rachel Weber made 23 saves in the win, while Drinkwater had 22 saves in the loss.
Princeton is now 5-10-1 overall and completes its two-game series with Syracuse on Saturday at 4 p.m.
