Colgate Scores Overtime Win
HAMILTON, N.Y. – The Colgate
women’s ice hockey team (1-1) secured its first win of the
season on Saturday afternoon when it defeated No. 8 New Hampshire
1-0 in overtime. Junior goaltender Kimberly Sass (East Amherst,
N.Y.) had 31 saves.
Both teams came out playing aggressively in the first period,
after both suffering a loss the night before with UNH losing 4-2 to
Syracuse and Colgate losing 4-0 to No. 9 Boston College. The teams
battled it out on the ice but by the first intermission, it was the
Wildcats who had the upper hand, outshooting the Raiders 19-6.
In the second period both teams came out looking to get their mark
on the scoreboard. Colgate had majority of the shots after creating
a series of close attempts, one of which hit the post, but could
not score, leaving the game tied at 0-0.
After a scoreless third period, the teams had one more chance to
make their mark in overtime. The Wildcats attacked the
Raiders’ net first, having a few scrambles in front of the
goal, but were unable to get past Sass who made one save after
another. Colgate returned the favor with three close attempts on
net, one of which slid through the goaltender's pads but failed to
cross the line. Then, like a fairy-tale ending, the Raiders finally
found their first goal of the season when sophomore forward
Brittany Phillips (Lauder, Man.) knocked the puck past the UNH
goaltender to win the game for Colgate. Sophomore Jordan Brickner
(Lake Forest, Ill.) and freshman Jocelyn Simpson (Shorewood, Ill.)
were credited with the assists.
Colgate will continue their six-game homestand next weekend when
it hosts Connecticut on Friday, Oct. 15 at 7 p.m. and Providence on
Saturday, Oct. 16 at 3 p.m. for its third and fourth game of the
season.
