Golden Knights Tripped by UConn
Storrs, CT - Despite a goal from Juana Baribeau
(Amos, QUE) that broke the early-season scoring slump, the Clarkson
University Women's Hockey team couldn't get into the win column
Saturday afternoon, falling to the University of Connecticut 3-1.
The Golden Knights, who are receiving votes in the latest USCHO
poll just outside the top 10, fell to 0-3-0 on the season with the
loss, while UConn evened its record at 1-1. Clarkson will play at
Providence College Sunday afternoon, another squad that picked up
notice in the last national poll.
Following a scoreless first period, the Huskies jumped on the
scoreboard early, gaining a power-play score at 2:19. Maude Blain
scored her first of the young season, with assists being awarded to
Sami Evelyn and Alexandra Vakos. UConn scored 13 minutes later at
15:36, with Taylor Gross earning her first goal of the season, with
assists going to Blain and Jennifer Chiasson.
In the third period, Clarkson ended its season-long scoreless
streak, a stretch of more than 161 minutes. Freshman Jamie-Lee
Rattray (Kanata, ONT) took a shot from the outside that sailed
wide, but Baribeau picked up the loose puck at the bottom of the
right face-off circle, scoring into the vacant right side of the
net at 1:20 of the third.
Clarkson trailed by just a single score for the majority of the
third period until Kelly Horan scored into an empty net at
19:24.
Senior goaltender Lauren Dahm (Baldwinsville, NY) made 31 saves,
including 15 in the first period. Alexandra Garcia was steady
throughout for UConn, recording double figures in saves in each
period for a game-total of 34. Clarkson had a narrow 35-34 edge in
shots and both teams had three power-play opportunities, with the
Huskies cashing in one.
