Clarkson Suffers Loss at Providence
Goals have been hard to come by for the
young Clarkson University Women’s Hockey team this season and
it did not get easier on Sunday afternoon as the Golden Knights
fell 5-0
at Providence College.
Despite out-shooting the Friars 35-18 on
the road, Clarkson could not find the back of the net and suffered
its third shutout of the season.
The Knights were all over the Friars in the
opening 20 minutes with a 14-2 shot advantage in the scoreless
first period. Providence (3-1) came alive in the second stand and
scored four times on 12 shots during the stanza. Alyse Ruff
led the way for the Friars with the game’s first two scores,
power-play markers at 2:25 and 10:19. Emily Groth and
Kate Bacon added goals at 13:13 and 17:10, respectively.
Laura Veharanta closed out the scoring
with Providence’s fifth goal with 27 seconds left in the
contest.
Senior Lauren Dahm (Baldwinsville, NY)
started in the Clarkson goal and posted seven saves on 10 shots
before leaving after the Friars' third goal. Freshman Erica
Howe (Ottawa, ONT) played the final 27 minutes for the Knights and
recorded six stops.
Clarkson was 0-of-5 on the power play,
while Providence was 2-of-5 on the man-advantage.
The Knights, at 0-4, will look for their
first victory of the season when they battle arch-rival St.
Lawrence University in a home-and-home non-conference series this
weekend. Clarkson hosts the Saints on Friday at Cheel Arena in a
3:30 p.m. contest and then plays St. Lawrence over in Canton on
Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
