Big Red Too Much for Harvard
ITHACA, N.Y. -- Hayley Hughes had two goals and one assist and
Amanda Mazzotta recorded her 13th career shutout as No. 2 Cornell
knocked off No. 10 Harvard 3-0 on Friday evening at Lynah Rink. The
Big Red (5-1-0, 3-0-0 ECAC Hockey) rebounded from a 4-3 overtime
loss on Tuesday to No. 4 Mercyhurst with its first win over a
ranked team this season, handing the Crimson its first loss of the
season (1-1-1, 1-1-1 ECAC Hockey).
Hughes scored the game-winner just 7:30 into the contest on a
blast in front of the net off a nifty feed from Laura Fortino.
Catherine White picked up her fifth assist of the season on the
power play goal as well. The penalty and ensuing goal
shifted momentum, which sat with the visitors at the time, and
Cornell never looked back. The home team held an 11-5 shot
advantage after one and increased it to 24-13 after two, as
Cornell picked up two more tallies to take a 3-0 lead into the
final period.
Amber Overguard and Lauriane Rougeau each got their first goals of
the season in the second, with Hughes assisting on the first score
midway through the period in five-on-five action. Six minutes
later, Rougeau scored again on the power play with both
Fortino and Hughes picking up their second assists of the
evening.
Cornell had plenty of opportunities with an extra
skater, with seven power play opportunities on eight Crimson
infractions, generating 10 shots on goal and numerous other
dangerous scoring opportunities. The Big Red,
meanwhile, was whistled just twice
Harvard, desperate to get on the scoreboard against Mazzotta,
peppered the goaltender with 11 third-period shots, but she was up
to thechallenge in posting her first shutout of the young season.
Her counterpart, Laura Bellamy, made 26 saves of her own, including
21 in the first two periods to keep the Crimson from falling
further behind.
Cornell will look to remain unbeaten in conference play tomorrow
when it plays host to Dartmouth at 4 p.m. at Lynah Rink. The Big
Green are coming off a 6-2 victory over Colgate on Friday
evening.
