Colgate Topped by St. Lawrence
HAMILTON, N.Y. (12/04/10) – Despite
making a comeback to hold the lead going into the final period, the
Colgate women's hockey team could not hold off St. Lawrence as the
Raiders suffered a tough 5-3 setback on Saturday afternoon in Starr
Rink. Freshman Rachel
Walsh and sophomores Jessica
Hootz and Kristi-Lyn
Pollock scored a goal each for the Raiders.
Colgate got off to a quick start in the first few minutes of the
game, creating a series of opportunities, one of which was a shot
by senior Jessi
Waters that hit the pipe. As the game progressed St.
Lawrence began to attack the Raiders' net, and eventually found a
goal at the 7:44 mark when Kelly Sabatine knocked a rebound into
the net to give her team the 1-0 lead. The one-goal deficit did not
deter Colgate, as the team continued to search for an equalizer.
Success finally came at the 13:26 mark when Hootz picked up a pass
from freshman Taylor
Volpe and fired the puck through traffic and into the net
to tie the game at 1-1. Freshman Jocelyn
Simpson was also credited with an assist.
In the second period both teams came out looking to get the
advantage. The Raiders struck first at the 01:23 mark when Walsh
came up the end boards, cut to the middle and blasted the puck past
Maxie Weisz to give Colgate the 2-1 lead. Sophomore Jenna
Klynstra and Waters were credited with the assists. The
Raiders held the lead throughout most of the period until the
Saints answered back at the15:04 mark to tie the game once again.
The Raiders soon reclaimed the lead three minutes later. Pollock
received the puck from Amanda
Kirwan and roofed it to give Colgate the 3-2 lead going
into the final period.
In the third frame it was St. Lawrence that came out to the better
start, finding two quick goals at the 04:04 and 04:34 marks from
Michelle Ng and Kayla Sullivan to take the 4-3 lead. As the clock
wound down, both teams picked up their intensity, causing the game
to become more physical. The aggressive play soon led to a penalty
shot for Colgate at the 09:59 mark when Rylee Smith was called for
tripping Waters. However, the senior could not convert the shot,
leaving the score at 4-3. The Saints then went on to score a final
goal in the last few minutes of play to end the game with a 5-3
victory.
Junior Kimberly
Sass had 21 saves for the Raiders while Weisz had 22 for
St. Lawrence.
Colgate will resume play on Jan. 3, 2011 when it travels to
Syracuse for its final non-conference game of the season.
