Cornell Cruises by St. Lawrence
ITHACA, N.Y. -- Rebecca Johnston scored a pair of goals and
Laura Fortino scored one and had a pair of assists to lead the
Cornell women's hockey team to a 3-1 victory over St. Lawrence on
Friday afternoon at Lynah Rink. The win keeps top-ranked Cornell
unbeaten in ECAC Hockey play at 7-0 and 12-1 overall, while St.
Lawrence falls to 7-7-2 overall and 3-3 in league play.
Jessica Campbell, Karlee Overguard, Lauriane Rougeau and Brianne
Jenner each chipped in an assist for the Big Red, who got 17 saves
from Amanda Mazzotta in the victory. The Big Red finished the night
scoreless in three power-play chances.
For St. Lawrence, Josee Belanger scored the lone goal, with Kelly
Sabatine and Rylee Smith picking up assists. Maxie Weisz took the
loss in goal, making 29 saves on the day. The Saints were scoreless
in five power-play chances.
Cornell got on the board at the 8:12 mark of the game when
Johnston scored the first of her two tallies. Campbell sent the
puck toward the net, where it glanced off of Johnston's leg and
into the back of the goal. Fortino made it 2-0 1:13 later when,
after a shot by Karlee Overguard was blocked by the St. Lawrence
defense, Fortino one-timed the puck through traffic and through the
legs of Weisz as the Big Red took the 2-0 lead into the first
intermission.
In the second period, Cornell needed just 13 seconds to add to the
lead, as Johnston crashed the net and tipped home a pass from
Jenner. From there, Cornell held onto the lead, in spite of
Belanger's goal at the 11:29 mark of the period, firing a shot from
the point that found its way through traffic before sneaking under
the crossbar.
The third period was scoreless, despite St. Lawrence ending the
game with a 6-on-4 advantage for the final 1:47 after Weisz was
pulled for the extra skater and Cornell down a man after a hooking
call on Amber Overguard.
The Big Red closes out the fall semester on Saturday when it plays
host to Clarkson in a 3 p.m. contest at Lynah Rink. Saturday's game
will be a benefit game for the United Way of Tompkins County, with
$1 for every ticket sold going to benefit the United Way.
