Raiders Score Five Unanswered Goals to Beat Clarkson
HAMILTON, N.Y. (12/03/10) – The Colgate
University women's ice hockey team secured its third ECAC win of
the season when it defeated Clarkson 5-2 on Friday evening. The
Raiders were able to come back from a two-goal deficit in the first
period to score two goals in the second period and another three in
the third, to win the game.
Colgate (6-11, 3-4 ECAC) had three players with two points in the
game. Freshman Rachel
Walsh (Calgary, Alta.) scored two goals while sophomores
Jenna
Klynstra (Edmonton, Alta.) and Brittany
Phillips (Lauder, Man.) had one goal and one assist
apiece. Freshman Jocelyn
Simpson (Shorewood, Ill.) also scored a goal for the
Raiders.
The Raiders had a solid start in the first few minutes of play,
firing one shot after another at Clarkson's net. The Golden Knights
soon found their rhythm, creating some close opportunities and
eventually finding success at the 11:23 mark, when Melissa Waldie
picked up a loose puck from a blocked shot and snuck it past
Kimberly
Sass (East Amherst, N.Y.) to give her team the lead.
Clarkson then found the net once again just two minutes later, when
Waldie connected with a pass from teammate Jamie Lee Rattray to
score her second goal of the night and give the Knights the 2-0
lead.
Down two goals, Colgate came out to an explosive start in the
second frame. Both teams continued to battle it out on the ice, but
this time it was the Raiders that were able to light the lamp with
two quick goals. The team found its first goal at the 15:47 mark
when Klynstra received a pass from senior Jessi
Waters (Menlo Park, Calif.) during a power play and
knocked it past Lauren Dahm to give Colgate its first goal.
Phillips was also credited with the assist. The Raiders soon found
the net again just 30 seconds later, when Simpson picked up a
rebound from a shot by classmate Shannon
Doyle (Baldwin, Ont.) and slammed it home to even the
score at 2-2.
After an incredible second period, in which Colgate outshot the
Golden Knights 18-1, the Raiders carried their scoring momentum
into the final 20 minutes of play. The team found its third goal at
the 1:22 mark when Walsh collected a rebound and knocked the puck
into the net to put Colgate up for the first time, 3-2. The Raiders
never relinquished the lead, scoring twice more at the 16:33 and
18:57 marks. The first goal came when Klynstra won the faceoff back
to Phillips, who fired a sniper shot that went off the glove of
Dahm and into the net, to increase her team's lead to 4-2. Two
minutes later, Colgate scored again. Phillips picked up a rebound
in the defensive end from a Clarkson shot, slid the puck up to
Walsh who put it into the Knight's empty net to close the scoring
at 5-2.
Sass made 13 saves for the Raiders while Clarkson's Dahm recorded
29.
Colgate will resume play tomorrow when it hosts league opponent,
St Lawrence at 3 p.m. in Starr Rink.
