Weekly Release: Teams Begin Play

ALBANY, N.Y. - Five ECAC Hockey teams took to the ice to open the 2009-10 campaign.  Clarkson, Quinnipiac, Rensselaer, St. Lawrence, and Union combined for a 4-2-2 record in non-conference and exhibition match-ups. 

Clarkson enjoyed a successful opening weekend of play this past Friday and Saturday handing No. 6 Boston College a 5-1 setback Friday and garnering an overtime tie with the Eagles Saturday (1-1).  In a balanced effort Friday, five different Golden Knights scored goals, 10 Clarkson players recorded at least one point and sophomore goaltender Lauren Dahm posted 14 saves to backbone a stingy defensive effort as the Green and Gold won their fourth straight season-opener at Cheel Arena.

Despite outshooting their opponents by a 2-to-1 margin, the Golden Knights had to settle for a 1-1 overtime tie against Boston College Saturday afternoon at Cheel Arena.  Junior forward Melissa Waldie was netted Clarkson's lone goal at 10:39 of the third period.  The Golden Knights held a 46-23 shot advantage, including a 25-10 margin through the first 40 minutes.  Corinne Boyles posted 45 save for the Eagles, while Dahm recorded 22 stops for Clarkson.

Rensselaer won its season opener Friday, 3-2 over Wayne State, as senior forward Whitney Naslund led the Engineers' offense with one goal and two assists.  In goal, junior Sonja van der Bliek stopped 23 shots for RPI. 

The Engineers picked-up their third point over the weekend, playing to a scoreless tie versus visiting Wayne State Saturday.  Junior netminder Sonja van der Bliek stopped all 21 shots she faced as the Rensselaer improved its record to 1-0-1 in the young season.

Quinnipiac earned a weekend split as four different players netted goals as the Bobcats opened its 2009-10 season with a 4-1 win against Sacred Heart Saturday afternoon.  Quinnipiac goaltenders Amanda Nagel and Victoria Vigilanti split time in net and recorded ten saves each.   On Sunday afternoon rookie goaltender Victoria Vigilanti recorded 33 saves as Quinnipiac fell, 4-0, to No. 5 New Hampshire. 

Freshman forward Emma Rambo scored her first career goal in Union's season-opening game, a 4-1 loss, at Northeastern Saturday.  Junior forward Marissa Gentile and freshman forward Rhianna Kurio earned assists on the play.  Dutchwomen freshman goaltender Alana Marcinko made her first career collegiate start, turning away 35 saves.  She posted 12 in the first, 13 in the second, and 10 in the third.

No. 7 St. Lawrence scored a 2-1 victory over McGill in the teams' annual exhibition contest at Appleton Arena.  Senior captain Tara Akstull scored the game-winning goal, while three first-year students picked up assists in the victory.  The Saints managed to outshoot McGill by a 27-21 margin despite finishing 0-for-5 on the power play.
