Weekend Update: The Comforts of Home Ice

ALBANY, N.Y. --  The first night of quarterfinal action in the 2010 ECAC Hockey Women's Postseason Tournament did not disappoint, as it featured a double overtime clash, an offensive explosion, clutch play between the pipes, and a career milestone.  The one common element that all four playoff games had was the home team earning the victory.  One of the highlights of the day's action was Harvard head coach Katey Stone notching her 338th career win, setting the Division I all-time record for women's coaches.

At No. 1 Cornell 2, No. 8 Colgate 1:  Cornell scored a pair of first period goals and held on for a 2-1 victory over Colgate in an ECAC Hockey women's quarterfinal contest Friday afternoon at Lynah Rink.  Laura Fortino and Kendice Ogilvie scored goals for the Big Red, which won a post-season game for the first time in program history.  Amanda Mazzotta stopped 25 shots for the Big Red, which improved to 16-8-6 on the year with the victory.  Colgate got its lone goal from Evan Minnick early in the third period on a power-play, but could not get the tying goal.  Lisa Plenderleith stopped 23 shots in taking the loss for the Raiders (12-19-4).  Despite placing a combined 22 shots on net in the second period, neither team was able to find the back of the net.  The Raiders finished 1-for-5 with the man-advantage, while Cornell was scoreless on three power-play chances.  The two teams will tangle again this afternoon at Cornell (2 p.m.).

At No. 2 Clarkson 5, No. 7 St. Lawrence 0:  The Clarkson University Women's Hockey team earned its first playoff victory in five tries against St. Lawrence University, shutting out the Saints 5-0 in ECAC Hockey best-of-three quarterfinal action Friday afternoon at Cheel Arena.  The Golden Knights, ranked sixth in the country, improved to 21-9-5 overall with the victory, while the Saints dropped to 15-13-7 on the season.  The two North Country rivals skated to a scoreless first period, but then the flood gates opened for the Golden Knights.  Nine different student-athletes got into the scoring act for the Green and Gold led by forward Kali Gillanders' one goal and two assists.  Lauren Dahm made 19 saves for her ninth shutout of the season, while the combination of Maxie Weisz, Brittony Chartier, and Nikki Bongaerts made 25 saves for the Saints, with Weisz making 14 saves and Chartier stopping 11 shots.  Clarkson out shot St. Lawrence 30-19 in the contest, and both teams were scoreless in three chances on the power-play.

At No. 3 Harvard 5, No. 6 Princeton 1:  Katey Stone, the Landry Family Head Coach for Harvard Women's Ice Hockey, became the winningest coach in NCAA Division I history, as the fourth-ranked Crimson women's hockey team defeated Princeton by a score 5-1 in Game 1 of the ECAC Hockey quarterfinals.  Stone surpassed former Colby and Minnesota head coach Laura Halldorson, as she earned the 338th victory in her legendary coaching career, all coming at the helm of the Crimson.  Stone, who has coached at Harvard for 16 seasons, has compiled an impressive 338-142-27 (.693) overall record during her career.  Harvard, which improves to 19-6-5 on the season, opened the game netting four goals in the first period.  Forward Liza Ryabkina notched two first period goals for the Crimson.  Randi Griffin earned the game-winner firing a shot past Princeton goaltender Rachel Weber at 7:40 in the first period.  Laura Bellamy earned the victory in net, stopping 16 shots, while her counterpart, Weber, recorded 33 saves. Each team netted a power-play goal, while the Crimson owned a 38-17 advantage in shots.

At No. 4 Quinnipiac 2, No. 5 Rensselaer 1 (2ot):  In a three-hour game sophomore forward Chelsea Illchuk scored in double overtime to propel the Quinnipiac University women's ice hockey team to its first-ever playoff victory as it defeated Rensselaer, 2-1, Friday evening.  Freshman goaltender Victoria Vigilanti turned aside a season-high 40 saves as the Bobcats improved to 19-8-8 on the year.  With the win, Quinnipiac improves to 1-0 in the best-of-three game series with the Engineers.  After a scoreless opening period, the Engineers got on the board first as senior Allison Wright tallied her 12th goal of the season at 14:33 on the power-play.  The Bobcats capitalized on a power-play of their own with 5:28 remaining in the third period to even the score at 1-1, as senior forward Kallie Flor scored her 14th goal of the season.  Sonja van der Bliek made 33 saves in the contest for Rensselaer, including five in the first period, seven in the second and third stanzas and a combined eight stops in the overtime sessions.
