Weekend Update: Defenses Flex Muscles

ALBANY, N.Y. --  Tight defenses and clutch scoring were the keys to earning league points Friday in ECAC Hockey play.  Five out of the six games played yesterday involving ECAC Hockey women's teams were decided by one goal or ended in a tie.  The lone game that did not fall in this category featured a shutout, as Harvard blanked visiting Union, 4-0.

No. 3/3 Clarkson 3 at Yale 2 (ot):  Senior forward Dominique Thibault netted an overtime goal just seventeen seconds into extra time to give Clarkson  its 10th victory in conference games as the Golden Knights edged Yale 3-2 Friday evening.  Clarkson defenders Carlee Eusepi and Hailey Wood each notched a goal in the win.  Alyssa Zupon netted a first period goal for the Bulldogs, while teammate Alyssa Clarke scored a third period power-play goal.  Junior goaltender Lauren Dahm made 28 saves for the Golden Knights, while Jackee Snikeris made 40 stops for Yale.  Clarkson ended the contest with a 43-30 edge in shots.  Clarkson was 0-for-2 on the power-play, while the Bulldogs scored one goal on four chances with the man-advantage.

At No. 6/6 Harvard 4, Union 0:  Liza Ryabkina tallied two goals, while Leanna Coskren and Jillian Dempsey added a tally apiece to propel the sixth-ranked Crimson women's hockey team to a 4-0 win over Union Friday evening at Bright Hockey Center.  Laura Bellamy earned her first career shutout, making 13 saves.  The Crimson, which outshot the Dutchwomen, 53-13, for the game, held an 18-3 advantage in shots in the third period.  Harvard was 1-for-7 on the power-play, while keeping Union scoreless on two chances with an extra attacker.

At Colgate 3, Cornell 3 (ot):  Central New York rivals Colgate and Cornell skated to a 3-3 overtime tie Friday afternoon at Starr Rink in Hamilton, N.Y.  Karlee Overguard, Amber Overguard, and Catherine White each scored a goal for the Big Red on the day as they moved to 9-7-4 on the year and 8-1-4 in ECAC Hockey play.  Katie Stewart put in two goals for the Raiders and classmate Ali Edell added the game-tying goal as Colgate is now 7-14-4 overall and 3-6-4 in ECAC Hockey.  Cornell goaltender Amanda Mazzotta stopped 15 shots in earning the tie, while Colgate netminder Lisa Plenderleith stopped 33 shots for the Raiders.  Cornell went 1-for-7 on the power play, with Colgate going 0-for-7 with the man-advantage.

At Quinnipiac 2, Wayne State 1:  Forward Janine Duffy scored her tenth goal of the year and the game-winner as Quinnipiac defeated Wayne State, 2-1, for its fifth consecutive win Friday afternoon.  Junior Kelley Davies scored the team's first goal as the Bobcats improve to 12-7-6 on the year.  With the loss, the Warriors drop to 8-10-3 in their season.  Quinnipiac goaltender Victoria Vigilanti recorded 15 saves, including eight stops in the third period, in her eleventh win of the season.  Warriors' goaltender Delayne Brian turned aside 42 shots in the loss.

Rensselaer 2 at Dartmouth 1:   Senior Allison Wright scored the game-winner and sophomore Sonja van der Bliek made 45 saves to lead Rensselaer to a 2-1 victory at Dartmouth in ECAC Hockey action.  The win, which was the first-ever for the Engineers over the Big Green, moves RPI to 9-10-5 overall and 6-4-3 in conference play.  Dartmouth is now 6-11-2 and 4-9-1 in ECAC Hockey.  Both teams had trouble connecting on power-play advantages as Dartmouth went 0-for-5, while the Engineers were 0-for-6.  The Big Green posted a dominating 46-18 shot advantage in the contest, but could only muster the lone goal.  Junior Alyssa Boehm scored the Big Green's goal for her first point of the season.  Each team earned six chances on the power-play and both teams failed on each opportunity.

St. Lawrence 3 at Brown 2:  Senior captain Tara Akstull scored the game-winning goal and added an assist Friday night, leading the Saints' women's hockey team to a 3-2 ECAC Hockey victory against Brown in Providence, RI.  The two points brought Akstull's career point total to 100, making her the 16th player in Saints' history to reach the "Century Club."  St. Lawrence, which managed to outshoot the hosting Bears by a 47-21 margin, improves to 11-7-6 (7-3-2) on the season with the victory, while Brown falls to 2-13-4 (0-10-3).  Defender Michelle Zimmerman notched a shorthanded goal for the Saints, while Kelly Sabatine picked-up her seventh goal in the win.  Rookie goalie Katie Jamieson stopped 44 shots by the Saints.  Fellow freshman Alena Polenska and senior Erin Connors each scored for the Bears.
