Weekend Update: Defenses Flex Muscles
ALBANY, N.Y. -- Tight defenses and clutch
scoring were the keys to earning league points Friday in ECAC
Hockey play. Five out of the six games played yesterday
involving ECAC Hockey women's teams were decided by one goal or
ended in a tie. The lone game that did not fall in this
category featured a shutout, as Harvard blanked visiting Union,
4-0.
No. 3/3 Clarkson 3 at Yale 2 (ot): Senior
forward Dominique Thibault netted an overtime goal just seventeen
seconds into extra time to give Clarkson its 10th victory in
conference games as the Golden Knights edged Yale 3-2 Friday
evening. Clarkson defenders Carlee Eusepi and Hailey Wood
each notched a goal in the win. Alyssa Zupon netted a first
period goal for the Bulldogs, while teammate Alyssa Clarke scored a
third period power-play goal. Junior goaltender Lauren Dahm
made 28 saves for the Golden Knights, while Jackee Snikeris made 40
stops for Yale. Clarkson ended the contest with a 43-30 edge
in shots. Clarkson was 0-for-2 on the power-play, while the
Bulldogs scored one goal on four chances with the
man-advantage.
At No. 6/6 Harvard 4, Union 0: Liza Ryabkina
tallied two goals, while Leanna Coskren and Jillian Dempsey added a
tally apiece to propel the sixth-ranked Crimson women's hockey team
to a 4-0 win over Union Friday evening at Bright Hockey
Center. Laura Bellamy earned her first career shutout, making
13 saves. The Crimson, which outshot the Dutchwomen, 53-13,
for the game, held an 18-3 advantage in shots in the third
period. Harvard was 1-for-7 on the power-play, while keeping
Union scoreless on two chances with an extra attacker.
At Colgate 3, Cornell 3 (ot): Central New
York rivals Colgate and Cornell skated to a 3-3 overtime tie Friday
afternoon at Starr Rink in Hamilton, N.Y. Karlee Overguard,
Amber Overguard, and Catherine White each scored a goal for the Big
Red on the day as they moved to 9-7-4 on the year and 8-1-4 in ECAC
Hockey play. Katie Stewart put in two goals for the Raiders
and classmate Ali Edell added the game-tying goal as Colgate is now
7-14-4 overall and 3-6-4 in ECAC Hockey. Cornell goaltender
Amanda Mazzotta stopped 15 shots in earning the tie, while Colgate
netminder Lisa Plenderleith stopped 33 shots for the Raiders.
Cornell went 1-for-7 on the power play, with Colgate going 0-for-7
with the man-advantage.
At Quinnipiac 2, Wayne State 1: Forward
Janine Duffy scored her tenth goal of the year and the game-winner
as Quinnipiac defeated Wayne State, 2-1, for its fifth consecutive
win Friday afternoon. Junior Kelley Davies scored the team's
first goal as the Bobcats improve to 12-7-6 on the year. With
the loss, the Warriors drop to 8-10-3 in their season.
Quinnipiac goaltender Victoria Vigilanti recorded 15 saves,
including eight stops in the third period, in her eleventh win of
the season. Warriors' goaltender Delayne Brian turned aside
42 shots in the loss.
Rensselaer 2 at Dartmouth 1: Senior
Allison Wright scored the game-winner and sophomore Sonja van der
Bliek made 45 saves to lead Rensselaer to a 2-1 victory at
Dartmouth in ECAC Hockey action. The win, which was the
first-ever for the Engineers over the Big Green, moves RPI to
9-10-5 overall and 6-4-3 in conference play. Dartmouth is now
6-11-2 and 4-9-1 in ECAC Hockey. Both teams had trouble
connecting on power-play advantages as Dartmouth went 0-for-5,
while the Engineers were 0-for-6. The Big Green posted a
dominating 46-18 shot advantage in the contest, but could only
muster the lone goal. Junior Alyssa Boehm scored the Big
Green's goal for her first point of the season. Each team
earned six chances on the power-play and both teams failed on each
opportunity.
St. Lawrence 3 at Brown 2: Senior captain
Tara Akstull scored the game-winning goal and added an assist
Friday night, leading the Saints' women's hockey team to a 3-2 ECAC
Hockey victory against Brown in Providence, RI. The two
points brought Akstull's career point total to 100, making her the
16th player in Saints' history to reach the "Century Club."
St. Lawrence, which managed to outshoot the hosting Bears by a
47-21 margin, improves to 11-7-6 (7-3-2) on the season with the
victory, while Brown falls to 2-13-4 (0-10-3). Defender
Michelle Zimmerman notched a shorthanded goal for the Saints, while
Kelly Sabatine picked-up her seventh goal in the win. Rookie
goalie Katie Jamieson stopped 44 shots by the Saints. Fellow
freshman Alena Polenska and senior Erin Connors each scored for the
Bears.
