Weekend Update: Cornell Clinches Share of Title
ALBANY, N.Y. -- With Cornell's 2-1, win
over Rensselaer and Clarkson's 4-1, loss to Dartmouth, the Big Red
can finish no worse than tied for first atop the ECAC Hockey
standings. Cornell now currently has a two-point lead in the
League race and needs only a tie against Union Saturday to clinch
the title outright and the top seed in the ECAC Hockey
tournament. Harvard head coach Katey Stone notched her 337th
career win, tying the Division I all-time record for women's
coaches.
At No. 10 Cornell 2, Rensselaer 1: Hayley
Hughes and Karlee Overguard scored goals for the Big Red Friday
night as Cornell claimed a share of its first ECAC Hockey crown
with a 2-1, win over visiting RPI. Amanda Mazzotta stopped 13
shots in the contest for the Big Red, which went scoreless in two
power-play attempts. For Rensselaer, Laura Gersten scored the
only goal of the game, with Sydney O'Keefe and Amanda Castignetti
both picking up assists. Sonja van der Bliek stopped 25 shots
in taking the loss for the Engineers, who went scoreless in two
power-play chances.
Dartmouth 4 at No. 6/5 Clarkson 1: The Big
Green scored two power-play goals in the first two periods and held
off Clarkson with a pair of late goals to come away with a big 4-1,
win to keep their playoff hopes alive. Dartmouth got a
power-play goal and an assist from senior co-captain Jenna
Cunningham and junior Amanda Trunzo added a goal and an assist as
well. Senior co-captain Sarah Parsons netted the other goal
on the man advantage. Senior Mariel Lacina faced 23 shots and
saved 22 of them for her eighth win of the season. The Golden
Knights had one goal from Dominique Thibeault, coming unassisted
and goaltender Lauren Dahm stopped 18 of the 22 shots from the Big
Green to take the loss. The Green and Gold, who are 1-4-1 in
February, must defeat the Crimson and hope Union knocks off Cornell
at Lynah Rink Saturday to win the regular season title.
No. 5/6 Harvard 2 at St. Lawrence 1: Senior
Randi Griffin scored on a penalty shot with 25 seconds left in the
game to help Harvard complete a third-period comeback and seal a
critical 2-1, win against St. Lawrence Friday at Appleton
Arena. With the win, Katey Stone, the Landry Family Head
Coach for Harvard Women's Ice Hockey, tied the all-time Division I
record for victories with the 337th win of her career. The
win also pushes the Crimson into third place in the ECAC Hockey
standings with one regular-season game remaining, while the Saints
fall to seventh in League standings. The loss also spoiled a
brilliant outing in goal by senior Maxie Weisz, who stopped 30
shots including 11 in both the first and second period.
Harvard finished with a 32-20 advantage in shots on goal, though
neither team was able to score on the power-play (SLU, 0-for-2;
Harvard 0-for-1). Laura Bellamy finished with 19 saves
including nine in the third, while Weisz closed with eight in the
final period.
At Quinnipiac 1, Yale 0: Senior forward
Kallie Flor broke the scoreless tie with eight minutes to play in
regulation as Quinnipiac defeated, 1-0, Friday evening.
Freshman goaltender Victoria Vigilanti recorded 17 saves in net for
her fifth shutout of the season as the Bobcats' record improves to
17-8-8 overall with a 10-4-7 record in ECAC Hockey. With the
victory, Quinnipiac moves into fourth place in the ECAC Hockey
standings with 27 points. To stay in fourth place and in
contention for a tournament-host position, the Bobcats need to stay
at least one point ahead of Rensselaer in fifth place with 26
points. The loss eliminates the Bulldogs from postseason
contention. Jackee Snikeris recorded 33 saves in net for the
Bulldogs in the loss.
At Colgate 2, Union 1: Colgate kept its
playoff hopes alive Friday night downing Union, 2-1, at Starr
Rink. Colgate now sits alone in ninth place in the league
standings with 18 points, just one point ahead of Yale and one back
from Dartmouth. Colgate needs either a win against Rensselaer
along with a Dartmouth loss or tie to finish eighth tomorrow.
If the Raiders tie the Engineers Saturday, they need both a
Dartmouth loss and a Yale loss or tie. Jordan Brickner and
Hannah Milan found the back of the net for the Raiders.
Colgate, which outshot Union 45-17 overall, outlasted a final
effort by the Dutchwomen to tie the game. Lisa
Plenderleith finished with 16 saves on the evening for the win,
while Katie Gallagher made 43 stops for Union. Colgate went
2-8 on the power-play with the Dutchwomen finishing 1-9.
Brown 4 at Princeton 3 (ot): Brown picked up
its first league win of the season Friday evening, beating
Princeton in an overtime upset for the second consecutive year by
coming away with a 4-3 victory in extra time. Freshman Laurie
Jolin led the way for the Bears, picking up an assist and the
game-winning goal to give her 12 points on the season, while goalie
Katie Jamieson had 32 saves, including several huge stops down the
stretch to preserve the win. Rachel Weber made 32 saves in
net for the Tigers. Brown outshot Princeton 36-33.
