Weekend Update: High Drama on the Ice
ALBANY, N.Y. -- Overtime games, a hat
trick, shutouts, and timely goals...just a typical evening in ECAC
Hockey play. On the evening there were a total of four league
games that featured two shutouts and one overtime contest.
ECAC Hockey teams won two of three non-league games on the evening
as well.
St. Lawrence 4 at Boston College 0: St.
Lawrence improved to 10-7-6 overall as senior assistant captain
Britni Smith scored two goals while rookie Brooke Fernandez picked
up the first goal of her collegiate career to pace the Saints to a
4-0 victory over Boston College in Chestnut Hill, MA Friday
afternoon. The Saints pressed Boston College throughout the
afternoon outshooting them by a count of 44-16, while seniors
Brittony Chartier and Maxie Weisz combined for 16 saves in the
shutout performance. Sophomore goalie Kiera Kingston provided
strong support for the Eagles in net, stopping 40 of the 44 shots
she faced on the day. The Saints netted one power-play goal
in five chances, while the Eagles were 0 for 2. The shutout
was the second on the season for the Saints.
At No. 1/1 Mercyhurst 6, No. 4/4 Clarkson 3:
Round one goes to Mercyhurst, as the Lakers netted four power-play
goals on six opportunities to down Clarkson, 6-4 in a battle of
top-ranked teams in front of a lively 1,200 fans. Clarkson,
which saw a four-game unbeaten streak (4-0-1) come to an end,
suffered its first loss since November 28. The Lakers
(17-1-2) run their current unbeaten streak to 12 games (10-0-2)
with the win. Seniors Dominique Thibault and Britney Selina,
and junior Melissa Waldie scored for the Green and Gold.
Mercyhurst outshot the Knights 43-31. Junior Lauren Dahm made
a career-high 37 saves in defeat. Clarkson was 1-of-9 on the
power-play. Laker forwards sophomore Bailey Bram (2G-2A) and
junior Vicki Bendus (1G-3A) led the nation's top offense with four
points apiece.
At Yale 3, Union 0: Junior goalie Jackee
Snikeris made 29 saves for her 11th career shutout, moving with one
of the school career record, as the Bulldogs blanked the visiting
Dutchwomen, 3-0 in league play. Union outshot the Bulldogs
29-22 on the evening. Both teams went scoreless on the
power-play on four chances. Forward Jen Matichuk, defender
Tara Tomimoto, and forward Bray Ketchum found the back of the net
for the Bulldogs. Matichuk's goal, the first of her career,
came at the 10:39 mark of the first period proved to be the
game-winner.
Quinnipiac 4 at No. 10 Syracuse 3 (ot):
Senior captain Kallie Flor scored two goals including the
game-winner in overtime to lift the Quinnipiac past No. 10-ranked
Syracuse, 4-3, Friday evening. Freshman forward Kristen
Eklund also scored two goals and added an assist as the Bobcats
improve to 10-7-6 on the year. Victoria Vigilanti recorded 17
saves in net for Quinnipiac, picking up her ninth win of the
season. Her counterpart, Lucy Schoedel stopped 30 shots in
net for Syracuse. The Orange top-line of Lisa Mullan, Isabel
Menard, and Holly Carrie-Mattimoe each recorded a goal and an
assist on the evening.
No. 10 Cornell 4 at No. 6/6 Harvard 4 (ot):
Cornell would rally from an early 2-0 deficit versus Harvard to
pick up the point on the road in league play. Junior
Karlee Overguard scored a goal with four seconds remaining in
regulation to send the game into the extra session where it finish
in a 4-4 tie. For Harvard, Anna McDonald had a pair of goals,
while Cori Bassett and Liza Ryabinka added a goal each.
Christina Kessler stopped 27 shots for Harvard Laura Fortino,
Lauriane Rougeau and Chelsea Karpenko each had a goal and an assist
for the Big Red, while Catherine White picked up a pair of
assists. Melanie Jue also had an assist for Cornell, while
Amanda Mazzotta stopped 21 shots in the game for the Big Red.
Colgate 6 at Dartmouth 4: The Raiders jumped
out to a 5-1 lead mid-way through the second period, which despite
two quick goals in the second and another in the third the Big
Green were unable to stage a successful comeback, hanging on for a
6-4 win. Colgate's leading scorer and senior Katie Stewart
led the Raiders in scoring with two goals followed by Jordan
Brickner and rookie Brittany Phillips who tallied a goal and an
assist apiece. Senior co-captain Sarah Parsons was the bright
spot for the Dartmouth as she netted a hat trick and added an
assist for four points. The Big Green was able to outshoot
the Raiders 49-31, but Colgate made its shots count and the six
goals allowed by Dartmouth was a season-high. Each team
netted a power play goal.
Rensselaer 2 at Brown 0: Junior netminder
Sonja van der Bliek stopped all 26 shots she faced and the
Engineers scored two second period goals on their way to a 2-0
shutout of Brown, in ECAC Hockey action Friday. Freshman
Taylor Horton and senior Whitney Naslund provided the firepower on
offense for the Engineers. Bears' rookie goalie Katie
Jamieson made 32 saves on the evening, as Brown suffered its first
defeat in 2010.
