Weekend Update: Tight League Games
ALBANY, N.Y. -- The typical element
of solid goaltending in ECAC Hockey play was featured in the first
weekend of conference action in the second part of the
season. The four league contests yesterday were decided by
two or fewer goals with each goal scored being more precious than
the next.
No. 3/3 Clarkson 3 at Union 1: The Golden
Knights won their third straight game improving their record to
15-4-1 overall and 9-1-0 in conference games with a 3-1 road win at
Union. Clarkson received its offense from sophomore Brittany
Mulligan who netted the Golden Knights' first goal, senior
Dominique Thibault, who scored her team-high 12th goal of the
season, and her league-high eighth in conference action for the
team's second tally, and sophomore Juana Baribeau who added an
empty netter. Clarkson finished with a 40-20 edge in shots in
the game as Lauren Dahm made 19 saves for her 15th victory of the
campaign. Alana Marcinko stopped 37 shots for Union.
At Quinnipiac 2, Dartmouth 1: The Bobcats
matched the program's best record in conference play with a 2-1
home win over visiting Dartmouth. Freshman forward Brittany
Lyons scored the game-winning goal with five minutes remaining in
the third period to lift Quinnipiac to the victory. Senior
forward Kallie Flor notched the first Bobcats' goal as their record
improves to 8-7-6 overall on the year, with a 5-3-5 record in ECAC
Hockey. Senior forward Jenna Cunningham recorded the lone
goal for the Big Green. Victoria Vigilanti recorded 20 saves
in her seventh win of the season while Dartmouth goaltender, Mariel
Lacina, stopped 24 shots by the Bobcats. The Big Green drops
to 6-7-2 on the season, with a 4-5-1 mark in conference play.
St. Lawrence 3 at Rensselaer 1: Entering the
final stanza trailing 1-0, the Saints used three third period goals
to skate passed Rensselaer, 3-1 at Houston Field House Friday
evening. The Saints improve to 8-7-5 overall and 5-3-2 in
ECAC Hockey play with the come-from-behind win. Meanwhile,
Rensselaer falls to 7-9-4 (4-3-2) after seeing its 1-0 lead
disappear early in the final frame. Michelle Zimmerman
notched the unassisted game-winning goal for the Saints.
Neither team would take advantage on the power-play as RPI went 0
for 5, while the Saints were 0 for 4. In goal, senior
Brittony Chartier made 17 stops for the Saints to improve to 7-5-4
on the season. For RPI, Sonja van der Bliek stopped 23 shots
and is now 7-9-3 overall.
No. 5/5 Harvard 3 at Princeton 3 (ot): The
fifth-ranked Crimson came back from a two-goal deficit to earn a
3-3 tie at Princeton Friday afternoon at Baker Rink. Anna
McDonald, Kelsey Romatoski and Jillian Dempsey each netted goals
for the Crimson, while Laura Bellamy stopped 13 shots in her
first-career start, helping Harvard earn the league-point.
Paula Romanchuk had two goals and an assist to lead the Princeton
offense. Princeton goaltender Cassie Seguin made 22 saves in
the tie. Harvard out shot Princeton 25-16. Harvard's
unbeaten streak now stands at nine games (6-0-3).
At No. 10 Boston University 4, Yale 1: The
Bulldogs spotted BU a 3-0 lead and could not recover, as they fell,
4-1 in non-conference play. Freshman forward Alyssa Zupon
scored her first- career goal for the Bulldogs. Goalie
Melissa Haber recorded 27 saves for her eighth win of the season,
while Bulldog counterpart Jackee Snikeris stopped 30 shots in the
game. Forward Melissa Anderson netted the first two goals of
the game for BU and added an assist on forward Jillian Kircher's
second period tally for a three-point game.
At Niagara 7, Colgate 2: The Raiders fell to
non-conference opponent Niagara, 7-2, Friday afternoon at Dwyer
Arena in Niagara Falls, N.Y. The Raiders fall to 5-13-3
overall while the Purple Eagles improve to 8-7-4. Freshman
Jenna Klynstra was the first to score for the Raiders, while Beth
Rotenberg notched the final goal for Colgate, her fifth goal of the
season. The Purple Eagles received goals from seven different
student-athletes, including three different defensemen.
Colgate out shot Niagara by a count of 38-32.
