Weekend Update: Solid Goaltending Keys Wins

ALBANY, N.Y. -- One of the trademarks of ECAC Hockey rosters year in and year out is unyielding play between the pipes.  This genuine element was demonstrated during league games last night.  For the second consecutive weekend Cornell downed a nationally-ranked team by blanking Princeton by a count of 1-0. 

No. 7/7 Cornell 1 at No. 10/10  Princeton 0:  In a battle of two top teams, Big Red forward Catherine White provided the only scoring the Big Red needed netting a first period goal as Cornell moved into a tie for first place in the league standings with a 1-0 victory over Princeton Friday night at Hobey Baker Rink in Princeton, NJ.  Sophomore netminder Amanda Mazzotta earned her fourth shutout of the year and fourth in the last four Fridays.  Cornell went 0-for-2 on the power-play on the night while holding Princeton scoreless in three power-play chances.  Rachel Weber stopped 25 shots on the night in taking the loss for Princeton.  Cornell improves to 6-3 overall and 6-1 in ECAC Hockey action, while Princeton falls to 5-3-1 overall and 4-2-1 in league play.

Harvard 5 at Yale 0:  Netminder Christina Kessler stopped 21 shots to earn the 23rd shutout of her career, helping the Harvard defeat archrival Yale, 5-0, Friday evening at Ingalls Rink.  The Crimson scored three times in the first five minutes of the game, two of which were netted by Jillian Dempsey, who also handed out an assist during the game.  Forward Kate Buesser also turned in a multi-point night for the Crimson scoring once and handing out two assists for a three-point effort.  The Crimson successfully killed all five Yale chances with an extra attacker, while being held scoreless on its own four power-plays.  Harvard held the final count in shots, 25-21.

Colgate 1 at Quinnipiac 1 (ot):  The Raiders and the Bobcats each picked-up one point in the league standings skating to a 1-1 overtime time last evening at TD Bank Sports Center.  Sophomore center Melissa Perry scored her first-career goal midway through the third period for the Bobcats.  Freshman Britney Phillips netted her sixth goal of the season and the only Raiders' goal of the game for Colgate tying the game late in the third period.  Raiders' sophomore goaltender Kimberly Sass made 23 saves in the draw.  Quinnipiac's Victoria Vigilanti had 28 stops in goal.  The Bobcats improves to 4-1-2 in ECAC Hockey play and earned their 10th point of the season with the tie.  Quinnipiac's overall record now stands at 6-4-3.  The Raiders are 1-3-2 in league play and 2-8-3 overall this season.

Dartmouth 5 at Brown 2:  Freshman Camille Dumais netted one goal and added three assists, factoring in all but one score by the Dartmouth in its 5-2 win over Brown Friday night.  The Bears saw goals from Erica Kroom and Alena Polenska and had four different skaters with assists.  In net, Katie Jamieson took the loss, pushing aside an amazing 48 shots.  Whitney Woodcox saved 20 for the Big Green.  The Big Green showcased a 53-22 advantage in shots.  The Big Green was able to net one goal on the man advantage in eight opportunities, while Brown went scoreless on five power-plays.

At Ohio State 4, St. Lawrence 3:  The Saints suffered a non-conference loss to the Ohio State Friday night in Columbus, OH, as the Buckeyes reeled off three goals in the third period to hand the Scarlet and Brown a 4-3 defeat.  Natalie Spooner, a stand-out forward that scored three goals in last season's series with St. Lawrence, went for a goal and two assists Friday night, while teammate Melissa Feste scored twice and added a helper for the victors.  Forwards Alley Bero, Michelle Ng, and Jamie Goldsmith netted the goals for the Saints.  Deidre Facklis earned the win with 27 saves, including a game-high 11 in the first period, while Maxie Weisz suffered the loss after making 14 stops.  St. Lawrence finished 1-of-2 on the power-play while Ohio State was 0-for-1.
