Weekend Update: Shaking Off the Rust
ALBANY, N.Y. -- The theme through the first
part of weekend play was solid goaltending. ECAC Hockey teams
experienced it at both ends of the ice last night, as they continue
to prepare for regular-season play. Friday night's play was
highlighted by Rensselaer blanking Niagara 2-0 and Clarkson earning
a 3-2 win in the overtime session against visiting
Providence.
Rensselaer 2 at Niagara 0: The Engineers
remained unbeaten as freshman forward Taylor Horton scored her
first career goal and Rensselaer held on for a 2-0 victory over
Niagara in non-conference action Friday. With the win, the
Engineers improve to 2-0-1, while the Purple Eagles fall to
1-2-0. Senior forward Whitney Naslund added an insurance goal
for Rensselaer taking advantage of an empty net. Junior Sonja
van der Bliek stopped all 22 shots she faced in the contest to
improve to 2-0-1 on the young season. She has not allowed a
goal in the last 128:41 minutes of action. The Purple Eagles
held a 22-18 advantage in shots, while the Engineers were 37 for 61
on the face-off. Neither team was able to take advantage on
the power play as RPI went 0 for 9 with the man-advantage and
Niagara was 0 for 6.
At No. 7/7 Clarkson 3, Providence 2 (ot):
The Golden Knights improved their record to 2-0-1 behind sophomore
forward Juana Baribeau's second goal of the game 1:26 into overtime
lifting Clarkson to a 3-2 victory versus visiting Providence.
Clarkson took control early in the game when junior forward Daris
Tendler opened the scoring with her first goal of the season and
fifth career tally. Clarkson out shot Providence 30-20,
including a 21-12 margin through the opening 40 minutes.
Junior Lauren Dahm posted 18 saves in the win. Genevieve
Lacasse made 27 stops for the visitors. Clarkson was 0-of-5
on the power play, while Providence connected one in six
man-advantage chances.
Connecticut 2 at No. 5/5 St. Lawrence 1:
The Saints jumped out to a 1-0 lead, but the Huskies would rally
with a goal in each of the final two periods to spoil the
home-opener for the Saints. Senior captain forward Tara
Akstull would score the opening goal of the season for St. Lawrence
on the power play at 4:10 of the second period. Connecticut
finished with an impressive 20-14 advantage in shots on goal with
Huskies' netminder Alexandra Garcia making eight big saves in the
third period to help preserve the visitors' first win of the
season. Senior netminder Brittony Chartier made 18 for the
Saints. St. Lawrence finished 1-of-2 on the power play
while killing off all four of Connecticut's power play chances in
the contest.
At No. 3/3 New Hampshire 4, Colgate 0:
Colgate opened its 2009-10 schedule at No. 3/3 New Hampshire,
falling to the Wildcats 4-0, Friday night at the Whittemore
Center. The Wildcats recorded two power-play goals on the
night, including one 5-on-3 goal. The Raiders finished the
night 0-7 on the power-play while the Wildcats went 2-4.
Junior goaltender Lisa Plenderleith finished the night with 30
saves for Colgate.
At Vermont 2, Union 0: Freshman Alana
Marcinko made 23 saves but the Dutchwomen dropped a 2-0 contest to
host Vermont Friday night. Union made 13 shots
throughout the game. Senior forward Marissa Gentile and
sophomore forward Émilie Arseneault each had three shots for
Union. Vermont's Kailey Nash scored the first goal on the
season for the Catamounts at 11:05 of the first period. The
Catamounts then responded again with a short-handed goal by Celeste
Doucet 17:23 into the first period. The Dutchwomen will
conclude its three-game season opening road trip Saturday against
Vermont. Faceoff is scheduled to start at 4 p.m.
