Weekend Update: Shaking Off the Rust

ALBANY, N.Y. -- The theme through the first part of weekend play was solid goaltending.  ECAC Hockey teams experienced it at both ends of the ice last night, as they continue to prepare for regular-season play.  Friday night's play was highlighted by Rensselaer blanking Niagara 2-0 and Clarkson earning a 3-2 win in the overtime session against visiting Providence.

Rensselaer 2 at Niagara 0:  The Engineers remained unbeaten as freshman forward Taylor Horton scored her first career goal and Rensselaer held on for a 2-0 victory over Niagara in non-conference action Friday.  With the win, the Engineers improve to 2-0-1, while the Purple Eagles fall to 1-2-0.  Senior forward Whitney Naslund added an insurance goal for Rensselaer taking advantage of an empty net.  Junior Sonja van der Bliek stopped all 22 shots she faced in the contest to improve to 2-0-1 on the young season.  She has not allowed a goal in the last 128:41 minutes of action.  The Purple Eagles held a 22-18 advantage in shots, while the Engineers were 37 for 61 on the face-off.  Neither team was able to take advantage on the power play as RPI went 0 for 9 with the man-advantage and Niagara was 0 for 6.

At No. 7/7 Clarkson 3, Providence 2 (ot):  The Golden Knights improved their record to 2-0-1 behind sophomore forward Juana Baribeau's second goal of the game 1:26 into overtime lifting Clarkson to a 3-2 victory versus visiting Providence.  Clarkson took control early in the game when junior forward Daris Tendler opened the scoring with her first goal of the season and fifth career tally.  Clarkson out shot Providence 30-20, including a 21-12 margin through the opening 40 minutes.  Junior Lauren Dahm  posted 18 saves in the win. Genevieve Lacasse made 27 stops for the visitors.  Clarkson was 0-of-5 on the power play, while Providence connected one in six man-advantage chances.

Connecticut 2 at No. 5/5 St. Lawrence 1:  The Saints jumped out to a 1-0 lead, but the Huskies would rally with a goal in each of the final two periods to spoil the home-opener for the Saints.  Senior captain forward Tara Akstull would score the opening goal of the season for St. Lawrence on the power play at 4:10 of the second period.  Connecticut finished with an impressive 20-14 advantage in shots on goal with Huskies' netminder Alexandra Garcia making eight big saves in the third period to help preserve the visitors' first win of the season.  Senior netminder Brittony Chartier made 18 for the Saints.   St. Lawrence finished 1-of-2 on the power play while killing off all four of Connecticut's power play chances in the contest.

At No. 3/3 New Hampshire 4, Colgate 0:  Colgate opened its 2009-10 schedule at No. 3/3 New Hampshire, falling to the Wildcats 4-0, Friday night at the Whittemore Center.  The Wildcats recorded two power-play goals on the night, including one 5-on-3 goal.  The Raiders finished the night 0-7 on the power-play while the Wildcats went 2-4.  Junior goaltender Lisa Plenderleith finished the night with 30 saves for Colgate.

At Vermont 2, Union 0:  Freshman Alana Marcinko made 23 saves but the Dutchwomen dropped a 2-0 contest to host Vermont  Friday night.  Union made 13 shots throughout the game.  Senior forward Marissa Gentile and sophomore forward Émilie Arseneault each had three shots for Union.  Vermont's Kailey Nash scored the first goal on the season for the Catamounts at 11:05 of the first period.  The Catamounts then responded again with a short-handed goal by Celeste Doucet 17:23 into the first period.  The Dutchwomen will conclude its three-game season opening road trip Saturday against Vermont.
