Weekend Update: Harvard Shuts Down Minnesota
ALBANY, N.Y. -- In a battle of top-10 teams,
Harvard took game one in the non-conference weekend series versus
visiting WCHA foe Minnesota, 1-0. Home ice proved to be
valuable last evening for league teams, as four out of the five
teams playing host recorded wins, while the fifth home team skated
to a draw.
At No. 9/9 Harvard 1, No. 2/2 Minnesota 0:
The Crimson win the clash of top-10 teams as forward Liza Ryabkina
netted the game's only goal and goaltender Christina Kessler
stopped 24 shots between the pipes as ninth-ranked Harvard shut
down No 2 Minnesota, 1-0, Friday evening at Bright Hockey
Center. The shutout marked the first time Minnesota was held
scoreless since the 2006-07 campaign. Kessler, who has
amassed 62 wins in her Crimson career, is now one victory shy of
tying Ali Boe '06 for first on Harvard's all-time wins list.
Harvard stopped all four of Minnesota's power-plays, extending its
streak of holding an opponent scoreless with an extra attacker to
22 consecutive chances.
At No. 4/5 Clarkson 2, Quinnipiac 1: The
Golden Knights netted a pair of third period goals en route to a
2-1 win spoiling of an upset bid by a gamely Quinnipiac team last
night in Potsdam. Clarkson, which is 9-0-1 at home this
season, broke out of a two-game losing skid to improve its record
to 13-4-1 overall and to 7-1 in ECAC Hockey. Junior Melissa
Waldie started the Clarkson comeback at 2:29 of the third and at
the 8:47, senior defenseman Tegan Schroeder tallied home the
game-winner for the Golden Knights. Clarkson outshot
Quinnipiac 22-13. The Golden Knights were 0-of-5 on the
power-play, while the Bobcats were 1-of-5 with the extra
skater.
Yale 2 at No. 7/6 Cornell 2 (ot): Jackee
Snikeris stopped 38 shots, turning in her best effort of the
season, leading the Bulldogs to a 2-2 overtime tie at
Cornell. Despite being outshot by a count of 40-16 Yale was
able to pick-up one point in league play with the solid defensive
effort. Cornell dominated the play for much of the evening,
but needed a goal from senior Melanie Jue in the closing seconds of
regulation to send the game to overtime. Cornell also enjoyed
four power-plays, but were not able to score an extra-man goal,
while the Bulldogs went 0-for-2 on the power-play. Big Red
netminder Amanda Mazzotta finished with 14 saves.
At Colgate 4, Brown 2: Colgate picked-up its
second win in ECAC Hockey play as senior Katie Stewart and rookie
Brittany Phillips each had a goal and an assist leading the Raiders
to a 4-2 win over visiting Brown at Starr Rink Friday night.
Junior Jenna Dancewicz netted two goals attempting to mount a
Bears' comeback, but the Raiders 3-0 lead in the first period was
too much to overcome. Lisa Plenderleith made 25 stops,
earning her third win of the season. Katie Jamieson had 29
saves for Brown. Each squad scored once on the power-play
with Colgate going 1-5 and the Bears finishing 1-4.
At St. Lawrence 3, Princeton 1: In the Saints'
first home game since Oct. 31 rookie Kayla Sullivan scored a pair
of goals while senior assistant captain Brittony Chartier made 21
saves to lead the St. Lawrence to a 3-1 win over ECAC Hockey foe
Princeton at Appleton Arena Friday afternoon. Both teams
finished with an 0-for-2 mark on the power-play, and the Saints
closed with a 28-22 advantage in shots on goal. Cassie Seguin
made 25 stops in the loss. The victory moves St. Lawrence to
7-5-4 (4-3-1) on the season, while Princeton falls to 7-5-1
(5-3-1).
