Raiders Edge St. Lawrence
CANTON, N.Y. - Senior Katie Stewart (Exeter, Ont.) scored the
game-winning goal as the Colgate women's hockey team defeated St.
Lawrence, 2-1, on Saturday evening at Appleton Arena in Canton,
N.Y. The Raiders improve to 8-16-4 overall and 4-8-4 in the ECAC
while the Saints drop to 11-9-7 overall and 7-5-3 in the
league.
Colgate picked up two goals in the first period and it was all
they would need for the win. The Raiders were the first to score as
sophomore Heidi Peterson (Hastings, Minn.) collected her first
career goal, 6:20 into the first period. Krista Dermott (Milton,
Ont.) was credited with an assist on the rebound goal that put
Colgate up 1-0. The Raiders extended their lead to 2-0
just before the end of the period at 18:38. Stewart collected the
puck from classmate Marissa Dombovy (Webster, N.Y.) heading down
the ice on a breakaway to put one past Saints' Brittony Chartier
for the two-goal lead.
St. Lawrence picked up their only goal of the game exactly one
minute into the second period, but Colgate's Lisa Plenderleith
(Ajax, Ont.) had 20 saves over the next two periods to hold off the
Saints. Plenderleith finished the game with 26 saves while Chartier
had 11 stops for the Saints with Maxie Weisz making six.
The Raiders went 0-1 on the power-play while St. Lawrence finished
0-4. The Saints had the advantage in shots, out-shooting Colgate
27-19.
Colgate will be back in action next weekend when they return home
to host Princeton and Quinnipiac. The Raiders will host Princeton
on Friday, Feb. 5 at 7 p.m. followed by a 4 p.m. meeting with
Quinnipiac on Saturday, Feb. 6.
